Blind Item #4 - Old Hollywood Blind Item

When this A++ list actress and multiple Oscar winner arrived the US to appear in her first film outside of her home country, Hollywood execs were startled at how controlling and abusive her husband was. At a party to celebrate her new contract, her husband barked orders at her like a military general and his wife obediently followed his orders, robot-like. There was that time she arrived at the studio with her face black and blue from a night of beatings. The couple's daughter saw everything and was threatened with violence by her father if she told anyone. The actress found solace in the arms of several men including the married mogul who brought her to Hollywood, the A++ Oscar winning married actor/co-star who would soon ditch her for the love of his life and that future Oscar winning actor/co-star who was then almost A-list. It was no big surprise in Hollywood when she finally got the guts to leave her husband for that foreign born director, although some of the conservative power players in Tinseltown made it their mission to bring her down and at first they succeeded but the actress proved them wrong in a big way.

Why does this have to be a blind item when all the people are deceased? Does anyone know who the unnamed men were?

Yikes, so Ingrid's first husband beat her? I always felt that he was portrayed as the poor jilted husband she dumped for Rossellini.

yup Ingrid Bergman. The costar and love of his life: Clark Gable and Carole Lombard.

Steampunk Jazz said...

Ingred Bergman
Ist husband- Petter Lindstrom
Mogul- Selznick
Married A+- Bogart
Ran off with- Rosselini

Karen said...

@LiinaH, I think you got it! Married A++ was Bogart who dumped her for Lauren Bacall, the love of his life. Peck had only done a few movies before they did theirs, so he works perfectly.

Even I got this one...Ingrid fo sho!Go Ingrid for showing them all up. Love her.

Wow Ingrid, she took abuse from her husband but had the strength to tell Hollywood and fame to fuck off to live her life the way she wanted. So much respect for the way she got herself together.

Steampunk Jazz said...

Future Award winner- Gary Cooper ( high noon) after they worked together in For Whom the Bell Tolls...

Totally agree that it sounds like Bergman, but wikipedia (for what that's worth) says that she came to Hollywood for the first time alone, and her husband stayed behind in Sweden.

Ingrid. Definitely. Luise Rainier was also a multiple Oscar winner but probably not A list at the time. Rainier and Bergman are the only multiple Oscar winners from other countries from that era.

Yay for old HW blinds!

LiinaH said...

Cooper had already won an Oscar before working with Bergman.

Oof LiinaH, you're right, Sgt. York. High 5 for correcting live! :-D

I read Isabella's memoir about her mother, I don't remember but it's been a while since I read the book about Lindstrom being abusive but he was portrayed as very anal. But then too Isabella wasn't around for that.

I read this as Ingrid Bergman too. The child being Pia Lindstrom. Her affair, and love child, with Rossellini was a huge scandal. I remember my mother reading the tabloids with screaming headline about what a brazen hussy she was. How times have changed.

Frosty said...

Yep, totally Ingrid Bergman.

JoElla said...

@Tru I remember my Mom telling me all about it. It was quite scandalous when she left with Rosselini

Just because I remembre watching her on NBC News in NYC:

Daughter: Pia Lindstrom

(my first BI guess!)

I love Ingrid Bergman.

GoGo - I was just thinking "why does the name Pia Lindstrom sound so familiar?! I grew up watching her but had no idea who she was!

Yes, we've got it-
Star- Ingrid Bergman
Abuser- Petter Lindstrom
Mogul- David Selznick
Wife- Irene Mayer-Selznick
Married A++- Humphrey Bogart
Wife- Mayo Methot
Love of his life- Lauren Bacall
Future A Lister- Gregory Peck
Foreign Director- Roberto Rossellini
Proved them wrong film- Anatasia, 1956, won Bergman the Oscar for Best Actress

The A++ isn't Gable. Gable and the love of his life Lombard were married in 39, Bergman didn't even get to Hollywood until 39, so Gable obviously didn't leave her for Lombard. It was Bogart, left Bergman shortly before he got with Bacall in 1943. Thus why Bergman was always so bitchy about how great a film Casablanca was and always put it down when talking about it.

Future Oscar winner, then almost A-list? I'd guess Gregory Peck. Worked together in 45 on Spellbound, when he was just breaking out as a top war-time leading man. He gained prominence from his first Oscar nom in 45, made Spellbound, the Yearling, and Gentleman's Agreement in quick succession following it, which is what launched him into the permanent A-list. And he went on to win in his Oscar in 62 of coarse.

(It most certainly wasn't Cooper. He had been around and a big star since the end of the silent era. By the early 30s he was Hollywood's top leading man, so much so Paramount reeling financially from the stock market crash and not being able to pay Cooper's high salaries attempted to find a replacement for him they could groom into a new #1 male star. That would be the man in my avatar. Cooper's success in High Noon, was on his 3rd resurgence into Hollywood's top blockbuster levels. He had been A++ list for more than 20 years before that.)

...AND once again, I'll say it- this is a hint to Enty's identity: he/she obviously watches Turner Classic Movies. I've noticed this a couple times about them. As they just mentioned this tidbit on Bergman being exiled to Europe for the Rossellini affair on TCM last night during an airing of Bergman's films with Cary Grant.

^ all of this is pretty much the head of the nail, so to speak. Nicely done, NxNW. Esp. the part about Anastasia being a comeback film in the mid-50s. I'd forgotten about that, takes me back to my film school days.

Almost A list/future Oscar winner/co-star: ?

This could have been Spencer Tracy, who Ingrid did have an affair with, but that may have been later on after he'd already won an Oscar for Captains Courageous (1939)

Anonymous said...

^LOL, no. Tracy is another one who was already a huge star from the early-mid 30s. And had 2 Oscars already by the time Bergman came to LA in 39, Courageous and Boys Town.

Plus, where did you hear Tracy/Bergman had an affair? I'm honestly very curious. Her daughters have said they never heard a word about Tracy. And my all the records indicate that anything about Bergman and Joan Crawford were simply studio PR rigged faked relationships.

kit said...

@nxnw & @zilla - I recalled my mother talking about an early relationship between Bergman and Tracy as well, and that's who I assumed first, love of his life being Hepburn.

Then I recalled Bogart. :P

I remember Ingrid's "love child" Robertino Rossellini as being very handsome as a young man. Did he ever marry? I read that years and years ago, Ingrid and Grace Kelly tried so hard to get Robertino and Caroline together, but it never worked out.

Can't find fault with a single one of NortbyNorthwest's picks.
