John Henson Dies

Puppeteer John Henson, the son of the late Muppets creator Jim Henson, has died in New York. He was 48.

Cheryl Henson says her brother died of a "massive heart attack" at his home in Saugerties on Friday. She says it happened after he had been building an igloo in the snow with his daughter.

So sad to hear of him dying suddenly like his Dad. I don't know which is worse, not being able to say goodbye or knowing you're dying.

Sad. Too young.
One of the saddest photos ever is that one of Kermit touching the Jim Henson photo.

My grandad (who is dead) use to work with Jim Henson on Fragul Rock and said he was the nicest man.

No, we have Family Day here in Alberta as well, surfer. Also BC has it, I'm pretty sure. It's a federal holiday in the states too, right?

We don't have Family Day here in the states. It's really a holiday there? Nice. :) Enjoy yourselves.

In the US it President's Day today...it's for both Washington & Lincoln...most offices are open except Federal Offices, like the Post Office

RIP Jim :(

I agree Violet, that picture with Kermit is heartbreaking. What an impact the family has made to so many childhoods.

Ah thanks, TTM. A few years ago, the former Premier introduced this holiday, because Ontario had fewer legal holidays than other provinces.

By the way, this is very sad and unexpected. May he rest in peace.

It's very sad :-(

I think he looks a lot older than 48.

Interesting fact about Jim's ashes, for those who are interested:

Jones said he [the son] was “the spiritual Henson.” After his father’s death, he took possession of the cremated ashes for two years and determined where to scatter them. “John and Jim were once driving in New Mexico, near Taos,” Jones said. “Jim pointed to a hill and said he thought that it was the place where he was meant to live.” In 1992, John Henson and other family members traveled there to spread the ashes.

What on earth is a Family Day? Don't get me wrong, I love the sound of it, but does it mean all the shops close so all families can be together?

Our next holiday isn't until Easter ... we get a nice long four day weekend though :-)

Islander day here on PEI and i totally read that at his home in SugarTits.....

@Stepforded--lol---yeah pretty much everything is closed. Some of the malls in my city are open cause they are considered tourist attractions. The liquor and beer stores are closed too which sucks! In Ontario you can only buy alcohol at designated stores owned and operated by the Government!

Sad for this family. They seemed to be loved by all personally and professionally.

@warecat: Can I be the little boy that lives in your mouth? ;)

Family Day and the other names it is under in other areas of Canada = an excuse for a long weekend in February to break the monotony and matching the US long holiday doesn't hurt.

@Derek - I think that's awesome for everyone concerned. The only time the shops are closed in NZ is Christmas Day, Good Friday (Easter), and the morning of ANZAC Day (a national day of remembrance in Australia and New Zealand) ... but dairies (corner stores / 7-11s) and petrol stations are allowed to be open all the time. I'd love for us to have a Family Day.

@violet I agree with you. I just love those new Toyota commericals with the Muppets. Makes me laugh and smile every time I see one!

This is sad. I appreciate the details but wish the sister could've phrased it it a different way. The daughter is probably going to feel guilty, or at least think "if only we hadn't," for a long time.

Wow. My condolences to the family. I was right there when two of my lived ones passed away and it's incredibly hard to be at peace with the visuals.
Too young. I wish only the best for the Henson family.

Jim Henson inspired my obsession with puppets when I was a kid. He was an amazing man who raised an amazing son. I'm so sad to see this story.

John Henson was way too young to die of a heart attack, but this seems to be pretty common these days for people coming up on 50. if it's not a heart attack, it's suicide, because what life is now and what we were taught it should be (before the 1980's hit) is a complete dichotomy. That is too damn young, especially in American years, when you don't even start growing up until you hit 38. :(

His poor daughter.

And I do remember the picture of Kermit. Still breaks my heart.

Christy let the people vote. The voters chose to have a different weekend than the rest of the country. All it did was make high season at ski resorts start a week earlier. Boo!
