Blind Item #9 - Old Hollywood Blind Item

This actress was B list back in the day. Mostly movies. She was kind of like Pamela Anderson. She was famous for being in Playboy and doing some movies, but not much acting talent. The actress also dated a lot of men. She says the worst sex she ever had was with this screen legend. She didn't know at the time he was gay but was wondering why he didn't seem to know what to do and "laid there like a sack of potatoes."

    1. I thought Monty Clift wasn't actively in the closet. This sounds like an old hollywood Toothy Tile situation where the actor knew he was gay but still slept with women for some reason. But if it WERE Monty Clift, even if he were a total sack of potatoes I don't think it could possibly be bad sex! Just look at him lying there - that's quite enough!

  8. This is Mamie Van Doren and Rock Hudsen. I didn't even know she was still alive but if you go to her website there's a video of an interview she did a few years ago with Phil Shulman. There's also a very, um, interesting music video that is NSFW if you can believe that.

  11. Mamie Van Doren for sure. I read her autobiography years ago. Playing the Field.

  12. If this was Rock Hudson it wouldn't be blind. And he was a working actor, not really a screen legend. I'm thinking more like Cary Grant and
somebody blonde. Didn't he successfully sue Chevy Chase for revealing he was gay, on national TV?
Yes Liberace was good at winning those lawsuits too...

  13. James Dean and Mamie Van Doren.

At least, they met and went on a motorcycle ride on Mulholland Dr. Van Doren says in interviews that they just did a little necking and he never called her back.

Rock Hudson wasn't really a screen legend. Dean and Montgomery Clift are the only legends who were bona fide gay. All the other actors rumored to be gay were at least bi, as they got married and often had kids.

  14. I was thinking of Barbie Benton...but I don't know who the screen legend would be.

  15. Cary swung both ways and was supposed a great sex partner.

LOL, actually no Dean and Clift weren't the only legends bona fide gay. To correct, Dean f*cked his share of chicks too (most people like to think he was strictly gay, but he was way more the f*ck anything that walks type) , and the legends list is long as hell.

It's definitely not Clift, he never bedded down with a woman. He'd be seen with them, and get into deep emotional relationships, but never went to bed with them. All the way back to his teens when he was on Broadway, he was strictly men.

The women would be a toss up between Mamie or Jayne, and at one point in the 50s Jayne was considered "A-list". Low on it, but still. Mamie never was that popular. And well Mamie loves to run her mouth about stuff like this.

As far as the guy, you could really take your pick of the gay or bi guys she's well know to have screwed- Gable, Hughes, Presley, Chandler, Hudson, Johnson, Harvey.

But it's likely Hudson, Mamie's talked about their fling before within the industry, and her descriptions sound very similar to those of his ex-wife's.

(Also, Van Doren never had sex with Dean, she wasn't a really notable name until after he died. And before wasn't among the very defined crowds he hung with or wasn't even in the same city as he was. Since he lived in NYC, and didn't get a place back in LA until filming EOE in 54, just to end up dieing in 55.)

  17. When James Dean was drafted, he registered as a homosexual, so he wouldn't serve. Actually, it would have been enough (and true) to state he was a Quaker or that he was extremely near-sighted.

  18. James Dean had a long affair with actress Pier Angeli.

@Angela, my dear, many young men who were straight brought forth doctors notes claiming homosexual tendencies to get out of service starting in large numbers during Korea. And in fact many other Hollywood types, known straight (or bi in Jimmy's case) people did the same. Because certain doctors basically ran side-businesses providing these phony exemptions to young men with the means to buy them. They were used since religious grounds were frequently challenged by the military and had to be rigorously proven with written church doctrine and testimonies, and other smaller medical issues (like vision) were often side-stepped by boards needing draftees. While homosexual tendencies on the other hand were by rule of military psychiatrists immediately dismissed without question since they viewed them as too dangerous to be among the ranks.

2 other famous 4F claimants include Fabian and Jim Mitchum as seen in this book, p. 146 (you can simply type Fabian in Amazon's look inside this book feature)- http://www.amazon.com/Marine-Mustang-Arthur-Eppley-USMC/dp/1553695003

See, this was a common tactic by the 1950s with the stigma of being declared 4F waning due to the more liberal beat movement sweeping through the youth(Dean was a big beat). It was not at all indicative of actual preference anymore, as most actual gays fought like hell to not ever be pegged 4F themselves.

What just might be the utmost proof other than the women themselves who've written books or been interviewed about their relationships with Dean, is the fact even Dean's male lovers like Bast and Gilmore have conceded he also did have relationships with women.
