Reebok Drops Rick Ross

I'm not sure that Reebok would drop a bigger star for similar actions, but the company did drop rapper Rick Ross this week after the world rightfully jumped all over Rick for his date rape lyrics. Ross has apologized for the following: 'Put Molly all up in her champagne, she ain't even know it, I took her home and I enjoyed that, she ain't even know it."

Even though the song came out several months ago, no one really noticed until the past few weeks. Rick has said that even though the lyrics sound like he is suggesting rape or implying rape that he really is not but he has given no other alternative explanation.

Horrible dehumanizing lyrics, esp in light of the gang rapes committed in US lately, where one girl committed suicide as a result. F him and his anti women bullshit. Glad they fired his ass. Hope its all downhill from now on. Cue the apologists for him in 5...4....3...2..

Good for Reebok. Companies need to research the celebs they want to hire to help sell their products.

If it's not rape, what would you call it, Rick Ross? Surprise sex?

I'm sick of this culture that excuses rape and blames the woman. I heard Anonymous is going after those 4 boys who raped that girl who then committed suicide. Hope they out the little bastards and ruin their lives.

Susan, me too. Dirtbags. One of the rapists called the victims mother to say they had sex but hes not a rapist. The mother said she was unable to consent, but the rapist didnt want to hear it

Cosign SusanB and Aunt Liddy. If there is to be no justice, I shout, 'Name 'em and shame 'em!'

Good for Reebok!

Agree with all the above!

Agree, but the unfortunate girl who committed suicide lived in Canada, not the US.

I am sick to fucking death of the pathetic woman-hating rapper culture. This is excellent news--hit them in the pocketbook, the ONLY thing they care about.

I signed a petition on Change.org to this end, not sure if it factored into Reebok's decision. I grew up on 90s rap, but I'm tired of the genre's culture of misogyny.

What must the mothers of one of these "normal boys" *cough* who gang rape girls THINK about what they've produced?? Whether in the US or India or Canada or wherever, surely these mothers (I hope) must wonder how the hell they raised these boys...?

Rick ross sucks. Hes the definition of a no talent rapper who got big thru paying for features and media manipulation. I mean come on, an ex correctional officer rapping about the scarface lifestyle. Fake as it gets... Im glad his downfall is coming. Should have happened a long time ago.

*sigh* This shit is ridiculous and what mad it hard for GOOD acts like The Roots, Camp Lo, Outkast, etc. to really get recognition.

To give everyone a wonderful current positive example click HERE.
Beautiful hip hop song that is just now hitting radio - Macklemore & Ryan Lewis (featuring Mary Lambert)
I highly recommend the listen, and hopefully enough people will be the record/itunes that it will hit more radio stations across the country.

Just want to show you all there there is positive hip hop culture out there to support. ;-)

Update - I just read 3 of those Canadian guys re the girl who committed suicide were arrested today. No names were in the article but I hope they'll be outed - this needs to follow them around the rest of their lives.

@SusanB. Good!!! I've been just so heartsick over these stories. It's not as if it's a new trend, but w/ the internet, this crap is coming out. And, I say, hell yes! Out the bastards and out those who support and cover them!!!

I read about another girl today in California who killed herself about seven months ago and the boys have JUST NOW been arrested. Same situation, passed out from drinking (not blaming her at all I drank plenty as a teen and it's NEVER right to hurt someone esp one who is not able to defend themselves), gang raped and pictures posted. *sigh*

There was a big online protest which I actually signed up. While I appreciate that Reebok is trying to branch out into the urban markets, there are plenty more family-friendly artist that Reebok could have used.

As a woman who was lost her virginity at 15 while drunk at a party, I cant even imagine what it must feel like to see pictures floating around of the rape. The poor girls must feel raped over and over again everytime they see the pics.

I still won't buy their shoes but good for Reebok.

Nothing against rap per se (I like some of the production when it's dense and harrowing) but these lyrics make me want to quit writing music altogether.

"Surprise Sex" - LOL!

Thank you, Reebok!!

Let this be a lesson to all those people calling Anonymous wortless punks and terrorists. They do the job that our so-called authoroties cant.

Good for Reebok, I wonder if he has any daughters? Sisters? A Mother? disgusting hateful lyrics. Pig.

With you, clearly he meant date rape and clearly he's an arse

This is bullshit. How many other felonies has Rick Ross rapped about, how many songs has he about pimps and hos and all that garbage in his oeuvre?

After 10 years of nothing but rapping about pimp slaps, bling and other sociopathic fantasies, and getting sponsorship deals in the process, everyone gets pissed when he puts a relatively tame reference to date rape in one of his raps?

Jesus H. Christ, America, you are one fucking schizophrenic weird ass nation. Drive-bys and pimp slaps are a-okay material, but when a rapper starts with something that might happen to a nice white college coed SOMETHING MUST BE DONE. Fuckin' hypocrites.

@Xander - not only are they awesome, but independent as well. And Ryan Lewis is from here in Spokane. Love, love, love them.

And you know @sarah, rap is SO not what it used to be. It's gone from 90's thoughtful to today's hateful

auntliddy said...

Spike, its ALL awful! Everything you mentioned. Its all hateful and unnecessary vile rhetoric.

auntliddy said...

Oh, and my black sisters get raped and gang raped too, everyday all over the world. So dont even try to peddle that racial shit here, dont even.

Jenn said...

No, it's just a sorry, dirty ugly thing done by awful people to other people who don't deserve it.
This Rick Ross guy has either done it, or thought about doing it. I hope he never gets another piece, and both his hands stop working. And...wherever he goes, the Internet is DOWN! In other words, no more for him.
