Anne Hathaway BAFTA Acceptance Speech

If you have a little over two minutes to spare you can watch Anne Hathaway give a soap opera worthy acting class on how to accept an award. It is so fake and so over the top. The best part other than when she thanks long dead Victor Hugo is when she bum rushes George Clooney to get to the podium only to realize that it is George Clooney she just knocked to the side and perhaps she had better hug him. The speech is just 2 minutes, but seems like 30.

I'd rather watch paint dry than her do anything.

God I pray please let her lose the Oscar. Please please please please.

KPeony said...

So over this bitch. She was only on screen in Le Mis for what?? 20 mins??

Kelly said...

How did she become so insufferable? Ugh! Not watching.

This woman is insufferable.

Meanie Rhysie said...

AnnE annoys me, but I can't find too much fault with this: it's what she wants more than anything and if it makes her happy, well...she got it. lol

Now go away.

Sarah said...

Oh my, I was saying that in my head as I watched her walk up, squeezing people along the way. I think it feels...disingenuine? Like that's what she thinks the public wants to see. It's her best acceptance act.

Laura said...

I like her dress.

MISCH said...

Didn't watch, won't listen ...I pray we won't see her for a while after award season...

I just can't with this woman. I've tried to like her but she always opens up her mouth and I realize I was right to hate her all along. Ugh go away.

I really didn't think that was that bad (except for "oasis of calm"). But then SHE THANKED FUCKING VICTOR HUGO.

Onyx Loathes Hydrangeas said...

The daily mails article cracked me up with all the tweets about her last night, my fav was "if hathaway thanked victor hugo, will bigelow have to thank bin laden?" Lol.

Eeekalicious said...

Bahahaha!! At the end I thought she said 'Victor Hugo - honey I love you'.

I don't actually mind her. I think she's a good actress, but she seems embarrassed about winning.

Stephen Fry was the host & he had a great line in his opening. He was wearing a goatee & he apologized for showing up wearing a beard. He then said that he suspects he is not the only actor who came to this awards show with a beard.

Amber said...

Okay, I made it 0:56 before quitting. I get being bowled over with emotion the very first time you win for a role; it's something an actor presumably puts their blood/sweat/tears into. After that, maybe find a little grace. (Says the girl who can't even win BINGO...)

Sherry said...

Oh Lazyday: the people at the bagel/ coffee alley are wondering about me. Seriously laughing my ass off on that one.

MM said...

She's pretty much swept Best Supporting Actress for every award she's been nominated for this season, right? At what point do you think it would go from genuine surprise to something you have to feign?

Anonymous said...

I've never cared for her as an actress, and she seems really annoying in real life.

Awkward and horrible to endure.

1.) It's not that I dislike her, per se, but I'm kind of hoping she wins the fucking Oscar already so she can calm down with the Oscar Bait roles. See also: Renee Z.

2.) So many awful, vile people in Hollywood. But Anne seems alright. I mean, I know her squeaky-clean image is just that and she probably does a bump every morning before even getting to her coffee, but these are minor transgressions when compared to, say, the reputed awfulness of CZJ, Halle, etc.

3.) At least Weinstein isn't behind all this. I already have mixed emotions about Jennifer Lawrence's campaign.

fubugrass said...

I don't know why so many people keep using the amount of screen time she has as a reason why Anne shouldn't receive recognition for her performance. Judi Dench won an Oscar for 8 minutes of screen time in Shakespeare in Love. Regardless of whether or not you like her, the length of screen time Anne has in the film is pretty unimportant for her supporting role nominations.

LottaColada said...

For someone winning all kinds of awards for acting, her acceptance speeches are so unbelievable. Painful to watch, and the breathing heavy into the mic is getting OLD.

Hire a public speaker coach Anne.

mikey said...

The breathlessness kills me. She needs a better fitness routine if it's legit. The run to the stage should not leave her so breathless.

crila16 said...

Is this the answer to the BV about the actress who is going to turn on the waterworks when she wins? Wicked stupid.

DewieTheBear said...

It's not even just her total insufferability at this point, though it doesn't help. It's that her performance is totally f****** overrated! I wasn't a huge fan of Silver Linings Playbook (especially the woefully miscast Jennifer Lawrence who somehow manages to have been married, widowed, cashed an insurance policy, designed and built a dance studio, complete with floor to ceiling mirrors, and entered the world of amateur ballroom dance by the age of twenty-two even though she is totally mentally unstable and sleeping around with coworkers - UGH don't get me started on this foolishness) but Jacki Weaver runs circles around Anne Hathaway's performance. It's shameful that good acting turns are being totally disregarded in favor of coronating this bloviating bimbo's ego with award after award.

End rant

Sorry, it's just ridiculous. I'm hoping that Oscar voters had their fill of Anne by the time voting opened last Friday.

at least the brits laughed at her dumb jokes, or it was a laugh track not sure.

I get she is talented and loves her craft, but this over the top melodrama that this, role, this one role will change the world is just dumb. It's just a movie and will be forgotten about soon.

Seriously, please don't win the Oscar my heart can't take all the schmaltz that goes along with you winning.

Sherry said...

What is with her gasping for breath constantly? And yeah thanking Victor Hugo was weird. Thank you honey?

Sherry said...

Dewiethebear: While I hear that Jen Lawrence is excellent in the movie thank you for pointing put the ridiculousness of that casting. I loves me some JLaw, but yeah, to have done ALL THAT by age 22 is crazy. And of course the man is a good 16 years older than her. Why can't they cast age appropriately. Kills me!!

I don't hate Ann - sorry Anne with an "E" dammit, but she is trying way too hard. She makes lame jokes at all these awards shows which doesn't help. I hope she does win because if she doesn't she will be trying EVERY year until she does - best to just get it over with. Anne really makes me miss Ellen Page's 'I don't even deserve this' genuine feeling and sentiment from a few years ago.

JSierra said...

Jason ITA, if she was just herself maybe people would like her more. But nobody likes a try hard.

Tigercat said...

I used to really like Anne. But her Les Mis pr/oscar push has turned me.

She was previously nominated for Best Actress for Rachel Getting Married. So she's done this run before. She's no longer a rookie.

It would be so much more gracious this time if she were to keep it simple, direct and to the point. Lose the giddy, oh geez, breathless, i'm just a lil ol gal, jokey, my name is mis-spelled, my hair and make up man, blah blah Victor Hugo schtick.

ms_goddess said...

I get that everyone's tired of her, but I sincerely hope she wins the Oscar. Her interpretation of Fantine was the only time ever in my life that I gave half a damn about the character. That lame-ass song never did a thing for me and I was moved to tears both times I saw it on the screen. (Maybe cause I'm trying to determine if there was a snot bubble in the works there and then I think of that episode of The Nanny where she's all gaga over Stephen Nichols playing the soap star Maxwell's trying to woo for his musical. Yeah - must be that.)

Unknown said...

yes but even if she does win the oscar which ugh i'm sure she will *gag* you know she won't quit until she has won for actress in a lead role! that will be her next goal, supporting just isn't good enough for this egotistical jackass.

prolixe said...

I didn't think it was too bad. I used to be a terrible public speaker until I got used to doing it - I probably sounded exactly like that. She's talented and I think she deserves whatever rewards she receives.

Trying a bit too hard? Yeah, probably, but it's not like that's a new thing.

OneGirlRevolution said...

The Oscar is, presumedly (like the other awards) for acting...not for how well she gives award speeches, not for if her breathing pleases people or not, not for how much she does/doesn't annoy people.

Granted, if you are universally loathed by those in the various academies, you are unlikely to win; but that merely says to me that she is not disliked (at least to a large extent)

As I said, the awards are for acting and, as ms goddess said, her 20 minutes were an amazing interpretation of the part she was given. She doesn't have the most beautiful voice in the world, but when she sang she brought a depth of emotion that had audiences in tears. As far as ACTING goes, she brought it to this role and deserves to win. And Frankly, if she's proud of herself for doing so (and wanted it REALLY badly), more power to her.

I'd rather sit in a corner and have shit flung at me than waste 2 minutes on this. Really.

Smokey772 said...

is this enty's way of outing that blind where the actress said she's going to accept her next award a certain way to "mix things up"? Not exact wording but I'm too lazy to find the blind...

Henriette said...

I so hope she doesn't get the Oscar. I'm rooting for Sally Field or anyone else.

Henriette said...

I agree that Jennifer Lawrence was miscast in Sliver Linings Playbook. That part was really for someone over 35.

Don't we all feel better about ourselves for coming just to say we won't watch. You won't watch the video but you are still giving this website a hit by opening this particular article then adding a comment. Why waste your time?

I hope she wins.

Reese said...

Tremendously overexposed, and every moment of that overexposure has been annoying. She needs to go away for a long time. Better yet, stay gone permanently.

Agree, Mynerva...hope and pray she does not win the Oscar. Ever.

ForSure said...

I hope she wins too, she certainly deserves it. She was perfect as Fantine.

car54 said...

If she doesn't win the Oscar it will be like Lucy pulling the football away just as Charlie Brown tries to kick it.

She has run a good...albeit lonnnnng campaign, and I don't think any of the others are nearly as desperate to win so I say give it to her so she can move on with her life.

She looks better with long hair.

She lost me at the Golden Globes when she compared her "struggle" with that of Sally Fields'. Sally, who spent almost a decade trying to make Hollywood forget The Flying Nun, and won an Oscar for Norma Rae.

AnnE had the huge brass balls to compare her own effort to overcome the Princess of Genovia type-casting, (which she did one whole year after the first movie, in Nicholas Nickleby), and brought up the Flying Nun in front of the whole room, when Sally Field had revealed to AnnE and other actresses at the
The THR Roundtable that The Flying Nun was a humiliating show for her to do. Anne knew that The Flying Nun was an embarrassment for Fields yet she brought it up in front of a room full of her peers.

What a shitty, shitty thing to do.

She's definitely going to win the Oscar, but I wonder if she'll think it was worth it when she realizes how badly she's ruined her image. Insufferable c-.

All about Eve said...

I know she's not the worst person in Hollywood but I couldn't finish the whole speech. I could see this if it was her first award but its not!!! All the heavy breathing, hands moving everywhere, the way she almost pushed past George Clooney! It's just too much!!! And she completely left my secret hubby Hugh Jackman hanging there on her way up to the podium!

Georgette said...

I've fast forwarded through her speech in every award show where she has won a statue. I would be thrilled if someone - anyone - else would win the Academy Award. I remember the year Lauren Bacall won everything only to see Juliet Binoche win the Oscar.

That was a good show. Even Juliet was shocked.

Ah, her generation's Liza Minelli: phony, endlessly self-conscious, insincere, over-the-top and utterly, utterly insufferable.

I HOPE she wins the Best Supporting Actress Oscar because then she will be cursed and go away permanently (as have almost all actresses who win this award - look 'em up).

Can't we all admit the Clooney line was kinda funny, then it went down hill... I got to I share this with the cast and shit it off...
