Coke, Alcohol & Viagra Killed Joey Kovar

Police suspect that former Real Worlder and Celebrity Rehabber, Joey Kovar died Thursday night in Chicago because of a lethal combination of cocaine, Viagra and alcohol. Kovar was on coke when he went over to a female friend's house. She does not call herself his girlfriend. He wanted more coke. She said no and asked him to spend the night. He took Viagra, but she insists they didn't have sex. Just intimate. She says when she woke up the next morning Kovar had blood coming out of his ears and nose and presumably died of a brain aneurysm because of a drug overdose. Coke and Viagra? His heart must have been racing a million miles an hour. Friends also say that Kovar took and abused a lot of prescription drugs too.

I was sad when I heard this last night. He was one of my favorite little sexy boys. They cast him because he was very open about his drug abuse, his feelings, his issues, etc. -- too bad he couldn't pull out of it.

This is a great way to start off our Saturday!

PSA math style: Cocaine + Viagra = Exploding Brain!

Snakeoiler said...

Not to nitpick, but isn't Viagra a prescription drug, and wouldn't taking it while taking cocaine be considered abusing it?

I was been sarcastic by the way. I was hoping for bunnies or kitties to start the morning to warm me up to stories of tragic death by a drug abuser.

This will most likely be the drug combo that finally does Sheen in. Very sad tho, sometimes you can't shake the demons.

I am so thankful all my prescription undertakings have only led to me being violently ill from the littliest dose.

Now I just stick to my herbals.

Poor kid and his young daughter. RIP.

Again.. Drugs are bad. Cocaine is bad. Prescription abuse is bad.

Ha! You think he would post a cute video in the am of tired animals stumbbling around. But noooo.

Who are the other Real World cast members who have died? I think I read there are 3 others but couldn't find names.
I hope his family finds strength in prayer.

Celebrity Rehab is like a pre game show for Death Pools.

I am sad to think he'd messed himself up so badly as to think he needed Viagra at the age of 29. I know, I know, people use it for the extra kick. But you know, it's also a kick to live until you're 75 or so.

From Wiki.....

Pedro Zamora struggled with AIDS.[19] He succumbed to the disease on November 11, 1994, hours after the San Francisco season finale aired. 2004 San Diego housemate Frankie Abernathy suffered from cystic fibrosis. She died on June 9, 2007.[171] Philadelphia's Sarah Burke battled through and overcame an eating disorder.[172] Key West's Paula Meronek battled anorexia and bulimia, and saw a therapist during filming.[173] Denver's Colie Edison battled mononucleosis.[174] Ayiiia Elizarraras of the Cancun season had a history of drug abuse and self-harming,[175] the latter of which manifested during that season's fifth episode. She received treatment for it after filming ended, and recorded a public service announcement on the condition that aired at the end of that episode.[176][177] Ryan Leslie of the 2010 New Orleans season suffered from severe obsessive compulsive disorder, which had deleterious effects on his relationship with the rest of the cast.[178][179][180]

The only one I remember is Pedro. :(

I guess its true what experts say; 12 step programs usually dont work, but its all we have. We hv git to find a way to alter their brains so they dont crave this poison. All drug abusers shld literally hv their brains exaimed to see whats going on in there and his we can fix it. Im sick of losing people this way. When i say brain exaimed, i mean post mortum of course.

djphob said...

@Della I know Pedro Zamora is one... AIDS iirc.

My SIL is severly addicted to alcohol. She has literally died twice and been revived. She has been to rehab more then 8 times that I know of. She has had brain scans and she is chemically dependent of it to make her feel more outgoing.

She is now on the pill that makes you sick from one drink and is doing really good, got into a grad program, moved to a big city by herself. I really hopfront my bf, their mom and dad, and herself that she stays sober. She is beautiful and I would never want this to happen to her or their family.

RIP dude.

@smashbash, sending good thoughts for your SIL. I didn't know they made such a pill; what an awesome thing. I hope she continues on this positive path.

I have seen too much addiction in my life; family and friends, in-laws, and a few years of heavy binge drinking and cocaine use for myself. It can be uncontrollable. When I think back on those couple years I was out of control, I am ashamed and embarassed, but I am also so very thankful I was able to escape my demons. My husband saved my life 9 years ago, and I have never looked back. I'll have wine (although not now, since we're preggo) and beer, and that's it. Even though I know I've been "sober" for a very long time, and we are surrounded with positive and loving friends and family, I know how easily those demons could come roaring back. For that, I am always on my toes. I will say that if you knew me now, you'd never believe who I was for that brief period of time back then.

@auntliddy, I do agree...wish they could find out what in our brains does this, and fix it. Or prevent it altogether.

The mental image of Charlie Sheen on coke and Viagra made my own brain explode.

Very sad about Joey. I mentioned my own addiction issues - alcoholism - on Enty's FB page last week. I celebrated 16 years of sobriety this week and consider myself incredibly lucky. I remember hearing in AA what a low percentage of people manage to beat their addictions. I think it is less than 10%. The odds are truly stacked against you when you have a drug or alcohol problem.

Carolyn said...

@Smashbash, best wishes to your SIL. I hope she continues to do well.

@Cornbread, congrats on getting to a better place.

Seriously, that Celebrity Rehab show has to be considered a failure at this point, right?

Pedro Z. was the shit. I love how pissed off he got when Puck dipped his fingers in the peanut butter. Last great real Real World.

Cornbread said...

@Carolyn, thank you. Congrats on celebrating 16 years, that's truly awesome.

Momster said...

Very sad. That was the one season of Celebrity Rehab that I watched. Mike Starr was in that season and is also dead.

Cecilia00 said...

@Ingrid - while I think it's exploitive, it has no worse/better record than any other rehab

GladysKravitz said...

I don't even remember this guy from Delirious Rehab, and I used to watch every season. He must not have gotten a lot of air time.

I went to look him up on IMDb, and I found his obviously self-written bio. It's the self-serviing slant and the random capitalizations that give it away as self-written.

Anyway, in the news, his family is saying that drugs couldn't have anything to do with his death, but reading his IMDb bio, it's hard for me to believe that his deep issues were ever addressed properly, nor that his family has a clue what happened to him:

Joseeph Eugene Kovar, aka "Joey Kovar" is a very courageous, optimistic, and positive man. Joey Kovar is a very well known young talented Chicago Actor,Model, and Wrestler, who is extremely popular with today's youth. Joey made his first debut on MTV's Real World Hollywood and moved on to VH1's Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew, putting up the ratings, stealing the limelight and spotlight from everyone on the show that stood beside him.. What most don't know is that as a child, young Joey was mentally and physically abused by his Mother. He was introduced, at a very young age to drugs and alcohol by his own Mother and Father, His Father an alcoholic and his Mother a user of cocaine were bad influences and unfit parents for young Joey Kovar. Joey at the time raised by these unfit guardians grew up thinking that alcohol and drugs were acceptable in a household. It was inevitable, Joey Kovar's past lead him later to a path he never wanted to take. Now Joey Kovar himself who grew up with all odds against him is a survivor of drugs and alcohol abuse, still fighting his urges today, because he has a dream of becoming "The Next Generation Action-Star".

Momster said...

Holy cow, Gladys. That's interesting.
Looks like his dream of "The Next Generation Action-Star" came to a screeching halt.

EGB said...

Wow, Gladys, thanks for finding that, poor kid doesn't seem like he ever had much of a chance. Carolyn, Cornbread and Smash's SIL, wishing you peace and health, thanks for having the courage to share your stories.

Whoever wrote that Wikipedia entry needs to learn how to write. You struggle with depression and alcoholism and drug addiction. Back when Pedro was diagnosed , you didn't struggle with AIDS, you died from it, plain and simple.

Thank God of the strides that have been made since then. RIP Pedro.

Hugs to you Smash and Cornbread! Glad everyone is on the mend. Thal for sharing your stories. It helps everyone else who still struggles or have friends/family who struggle.

I didn't mean to make light of the seriousness of addiction. I was fortunate that I didn't have to carry that particular cross (but have others).

Hugs and Kittens!!!!

PS - there is a GREAT article toay on Time Heathland called My Brain Made Me Do It and Understanding Pyschopathic Minds.

Both are really interesting. The second talks more about the damage that early abuse and violence has on the brain. It would probably translate to problems with addiction too.

Fun reading for you @auntliddy and @Agent**It if she's around today

Was he the guy on Celebrity Rehab who went home with Bob and showed him all this needles and steroid supplies in his kitchen cabinets? He seemed like he really wanted to get off all drugs. Such a shame.

dia papaya said...

Last article I promise. This one's on addiction, but the expert agrees that all addiction stems from childhood trauma - either abuse or emotional loss. The addiction is a self-soothing pattern to fill up that void. Treating Addiction: Why Kind Love Beats Tough Love

Selock said...

I know I am supposed to be sympathetic about how addiction is a disease, but I can't shake how it mostly makes me very angry at the addicts... Especially those that have children. I mean, I feel for them, but gtfover yourself. I could never share my life with an addict; and that's a decision that I have had to make. So I feel for the would-be family he left behind - hope they can find peace.

Just came back to the thread. Thanks so much for the good wishes everyone! Its up to her to make the choice everyday not to drink. She is getting stronger everyday. She did a lot of brain damage to herself but with time she is healing.

She was very abused around 13-20 by people her age when she was younger, in her teens and later. Mentally and physically. I used to get angry at her addiction but I can't get angry over the past or over her own decision to drink. I am happy she is healthy today and will be tomorrow. As for the future, that is in her hands. :) peace to all! Happy Saturday!

Some called the show exploitive - which it is - but these deaths are also really highlighting how tough substance abuse issues are to tackle, and how often people lose. Here's hoping there's a little cautionary message being delivered..,

@dia, your links were very interesting.Thanks !

@Agent - I was chomping at the bit to send you My Brain Made Me Do It after our back on forth on schizophrenia. I was comforted to know that no judge would let the guy off. Less comforted that the sentence would be adjusted (manipulated) by which side presented the info. Still fascinating all the same. Happy Sunday to you!
