Bob Welch Has Died

Bob Welch, a former member of Fleetwood Mac who also had a solo career, died Thursday of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said. He was 65.

I always felt sorry for Bob Welch because he left the band in 1974 I think. Right after he left Fleetwood Mac had their biggest fame and all their number one songs. When they were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, they didn't include him and he said it was because they didn't like him. Stevie Nicks did say nice things about him yesterday when she heard the news and he did have a fairly solid solo career and even had a song reach number 8.

That reminds me of the fifth Beatle.

I can see him now. . .sitting with Pete Best and both just shaking their heads and laughing about how 'life's a bitch sometimes' but at least now they can have the coolest jam session around with Jimmy, Janis, Michael, Elvis, etc.

@Henriette, wasn't the 5th Beatle Brian Epstein? Or maybe even George Martin?

Blankverse, I think Pete Best is still alive.

He was here and warm.

My apologies/not enough caffeine yet: ) I mixed up Pete Best with Stu Sutcliffe, the original bass player.

I'll definitely be listening to BARE TREES and HEROES ARE HARD TO FIND today. Such amazing guitar work from that man, and a lovely voice as well. Sad. :-(

The "fifth Beattle" is a long standing joke. McCartney said Brian Epstein (their manager) was the "fifth Beattle." George Harrison said there were two, Derek Taylor and Neil Aspinall. Neither of them are musicans, but long standing PR people.

Eddie Murphy did some wonderful bits about being the "fifth Beatle."

My boyfriend wishes he was the fifth Beatle.

Pete Best has been referred to as the fifth Beatle.

You know who the REAL 5th Beatle was? John Lennon's insecurity.

I seem to remember vaguely, that he was asked to leave the band on account of the fact he was bumping uglies with the then Mrs Fleetwood.

No, Jennie Boyd Fleetwood had the affair with Bob Weston, not Bob Welch.

(Welch always said that he left because the touring was grueling, and the legal battle between management and the real Fleetwood Mac and the fake Fleetwood Mac that was going around at the time was too much to handle.)

@AKM. Apologies, I must try and remember things 'clearly' as opposed to 'vaguely'.

I was really saddened to hear he shot himself in the chest due to health reasons, it's just a horrible end and so traumatic for his poor wife who found him. I loved the last Fleetwood Mac album he was on and literally wore that bad boy out.

@corode - I hope you didn't think I was being snarky. I'm just a big Mac nerd. Bob Weston, Bob Welch...easy names to confuse. :-)

Ringo Starr replaced Pete Best. I guess they could have two drummers, but that may have been awkward.
