3 Winning Mega Millions Tickets

If you are reading this and live in Maryland, Kansas or Illinois and bought a Mega Millions ticket you should go look. Despite the fact that 1.6 billion tickets were sold, only three tickets matched the winning numbers of America's largest jackpot ever. Each winning ticket will get about $213M before taxes.

So, if there are 176M combinations and 1.6 billion tickets were sold, it should stand to reason that about ten winning tickets were sold instead of three. That means that some number combinations must have had more than ten tickets printed. I'm guessing that there was probably a combination out there that a hundred tickets printed which kind of would have sucked if you won. Instead of thinking you are going to get $640M you might have ended up with 4 or 5 million. That is still great, but kind of a let down from 640M.

Maryland officials jumped the gun last night and said they had the only winner. That person went to bed thinking they won $640M and wake up to find out it is just $213M. Yeah, I used the worst just.

Congratulations to the winners. Go have yourselves a party!

I won $2! Well, I got almost half the money I spent on tickets back, anyway. I don't normally buy lottery tickets because I don't win, and I want to be grateful for what I have, because there is a lot to be grateful for. Those of us who happened to be born in North America have already won the world lotto, so to speak. And being an avid gossip reader, I've learned that fame and wealth doesn't make anyone happier or "richer".

I like to see Kansas in there. Even Illinois. Usually the winners are from New York, Georgia or Maryland.

i bought 20 tickets, not a single winning number on any of them. kind of funny. looking forward to hearing the stories of the big winners.

Florida doesn't participate in Mega Millions...just Power Ball. We have an office pool of about 15 who buy tickets every month, with the dream of ending up like those 17 lunch ladies. Of course we have to keep it hush hush, because Corporate America frowns upon "gambling."

Congrats to you all who one a few bucks! My hubby plays scratch offs, and won $200 last week...that's pretty exciting to me. I can't imagine what it would be like to win something like $213mil. I'd probably pee my pants.

Anyone else think it sounds incredibly un-Enty like to say, "Go have yourselves a party!" like that? He's never really used exclamation points before. Maybe he wants an invite...

Had my brother who is a Chicago cop buy tickets for me. Don't know if I won yet because he was busy until 6 am arresting 3 gangbangers and hadn't checked the # before he went to sleep! Until he wakes up and checks, I can imagine I won. :)

@ Cornbread - I too found it too jovial for normal Enty. He's gotta be knee deep in Bloody Marys.

If the combinations were sold in order and an equal number of every combination were sold, then yes you would expect 10 winning tickets. However, people who play numbers instead of taking quick picks will tend to use birthdays. As a result, tickets containing numbers less than 32 have a higher percentage of the overall distribution of tickets sold. In this case, two of the winning numbers were 38 and 46, so fewer people split that pot. The moral is, go with the quick picks!
