Dr. Phil Assisted In His Own Vasectomy

I have a new found respect for Dr. Phil. Not so much as an interviewer or advice giver, but he is way tougher than I thought. The man assisted in his own vasectomy. In an interview with Newsweek, Dr. Phil talked about how he got a vasectomy at the age of 29 and the nurse had already gone home so he handed all the instruments to the doctor who was doing the snipping. Seriously? Did he jog home after it was over too? Damn Dr. Phil. He later had it reversed because he said it was the greatest regret of his life and six weeks after that his wife was pregnant.

I call bullshit on all of it.

I'm sure he did. I'm also sure his doctor wasn't concerned with the potential liability in having a paitent assist with their procedure.

It would've been in 1979 so maybe. People have performed self-surgery so it is possible to assist.

I call bullshit. It takes a few months for sperm to show up after a vasectomy reversal (thank you mayo clinic web site. What I won't do for this site!)

TMI.

My ex-husband had one, and the doctor was the only other person in the room besides us. It took just minutes, I watched the whole thing. It looks pretty damn easy. You don't even get stitches afterwards because the incision is so small and genitals heal quickly.

@Seachica- agreed.

He's like Putin making up all this heroic and cool shit he's supposedly done. And he's NOT a medical Dr. anyway. In fact wasn't it determined he wasn't even a Dr.?
Like others said, bullshit.

"WHAT YOU NEED TO DO IS MAKE THE INCISION AS CLOSE TO THE BALLS AS POSSIBLE. I'LL SHOW YOU!"

@feraltart - you took the words right out of my mouth, and made me LOL.

Anybody read "Why We Suck" by Denis Leary? He kept calling "Dr." (Laugh) Phil "Dr Full" as in full of shit.

Couldn't agree more.

Now if we could only get him to assist in his own lobotomy...

@Mango: HA!
I read that Yul Brynner got a local anesthetic and, with the aid of a mirror, took photographs of his own appendectomy.

I stayed awake and "assisted" thru arthroscopic knee surgery. They gave me a topical anesthetic to insert the scope which not only didn't hurt but I didn't even feel the insertion. I watched the screen with the surgeon to guide him to the problem spot, which wasn't where he thought it was. The didn't knock me out until they used a cauterizing gun for something or other. Total unconscious time: 10 minutes. Total time from beginning of surgery until I was at home: 90 minutes. The surgery wasn't a big deal but watching it was kinda fun.

I've also had two colonoscopies and stayed awake thru both. They didn't hurt and no aftereffects from anesthesia.

Jerry..You're stronger than I am! I had a colonoscopy (no pain here either) but the twilight anesthesia(sp?) made me a total bitch. They shook that little container to show me the pollop and then asked me if I wanted to keep it, I said, "If I had wanted to keep it I wouldn't have had you in my ass".

@Sherry he isnt a medical dr, but he does have a PhD, so technically, he is a doctor in the broader sense of the word. From what I understand, however, he hasnt beem liscensed to practice since 1989 due to some ethics violation that he never resolved in Texas.
