That's a real nightmare. I mean, I have nightmares about that. Can't believe I just saw that!

(And my profile pic? That's me, whale watching in the San Juans. I'm asking for it.)

It's terrifying and beautiful at the same time. Eep.

The news said this morning that the whale(s) had their mouths wide open because they were feeding. It wouldn't take much to gulped up

That footage is just incredible! WOW.

I'd LOVE to be able to stand on a board for longer than two seconds. Surfing is an amazing sport, but it's also CRAZY.

Oh wow...a definite worst nightmare! I freak out if I am swimming in the ocean (and not far from shore mind you) and am afraid to look behind me....thanks Jaws, ugh.

Enty should have a "Your Worst Nightmare" topic. I have one that came up recently on a tv show, and now I have conviently blocked it and totally irrational. Oh yea, it was CSI Miami and a shark was let loose in a pool, my worst nightmare.

I grew up at the beach, but I never saw anything like that..

Here's how I would feel: AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think I would be more freaked out by the flying rats although the whale is pretty freaky.

Linnea, I also thought it was weird that there was no further commentary from the person filming it. Had it been me, you would have heard all kinds of profanities on that tape!!! *L*

That looked pretty frightening. Wow.

Linnea said...

Yes! Or at least some screams or something! I looked it up on other sites and it seems to be legit, but they say that the distance between the whales and the people is bigger than you are lead to believe on the video. Even so, I would have been yelling!

She didn't get in the boat, she is on her surfboard behind the boat, you can see them moving with the water seperately.

Holy freakin' shit!!!

The people in the background don't look freaked out at all. OMG.

Hey! This is right in my backyard! :) The humpbacks were all over our little bay for quite a few days - it was quite the news story. Probably no freaking out because that was exactly why they were out there on the water. They had to send out the marine patrols, etc because so many folks were out in the water trying to see the whales during the last 1 1/2 weeks or so...

Im nuts but I would feel lucky to have seen that up close.

If I had been there the video would have been even more amazing because you would have seen me running on top of the water to shore.

mooshki said...

Is this off of Santa Cruz? I read that a pod of whales were hanging out unusually close to shore.

mooshki said...

Also, it looks like the person shooting the video was pretty close too!

MacVixen - where you been?

I found the video fascinating. I can't stop watching it! And I was wondering what happened to the girl on the surfboard. She jumped into the kayak! Bet she never moved that fast before. LOLOL

i have an honest to god phobia of whales. it is so bad i can't even watch the video. i need to go on that show on Animal Planet about extreme animal phobias. my fear doesn't make any sense, it is just THERE. always has been. i remember taking a ferry to Victoria from Port Angeles (Washington) and seeing a pod of whales at 9 and almost passing out from the fear!

Linnea said...

Thats where I live! I love that ferry, and I go out to try to see whales as often as I can... :)

Chrissy Buns said...

i love that area, too. i live about 3 hours south of Port Angeles. we live in the most beautiful area, don't we?

Linnea said...

It is amazing. Every single day I in awe of what those mountains bring out.

HOLY CRAP!!!!!!!!

i will never tire of living in Washington. i love visiting other states, but, for me, Washington is where it's at! and as a surfer, i have NEVER been attacked by a whale! lol!

Linnea said...

Learning how to surf is on my list of things to do while I am here! What are the best months to go in your opinion?

Chrissy Buns said...

mid spring to mid fall. winter is pretty brutal, and the rip changes and becomes much stronger. the farther out the waves break white is good, as well.

Laurie-Anne R Collins said...

Whoa! Why do yo do this to me! I just took up surfing this year.

MacVixen said...

@mooshki - yes, it is in Santa Cruz, which is where I live. It was quite exciting having the whales coming to visit us for a short while. We also got lots of dolphins as well - a good few weeks to be a coastal dweller!

This is yet another reason why I don't go in open water above my waist unless I'm in a large boat.

I was a little traumatized by watching Moby Dick on tv as a child when Gregory Peck got dragged underwater but learned that they are not that dangerous to humans. I'm not sure I would go out in a dinghy around them though, I'd want to be in a more sturdy boat.

Chrissy Buns & Linnea, we are neighbors!

What Anotheramy said.

I really want to go on an Alaskan cruise so I can whale watch! Beautiful creatures.
