Billionaires Get DUI Tickets Too

Do you know who the 10th richest person in America is? Well, she is also the 21st richest in the world. Her name is Alice Walton and her dad founded Wal-Mart. Yeah, so she has about 21 billion dollars kicking around in the bank. You would think that someone with that kind of cash could spring for a cab after a night of drinking. But, no, instead the billionaire decided to drink and drive and on her birthday no less. The 62 year old woman was busted while speeding through a construction zone in Fort Worth, Texas and police determined she had been drinking. She was arrested and posted the $1,000 bond. I just don't understand why you would ever take a chance on a DUI, and even less so when you basically could afford to hire as many drivers as anyone could ever want. She has enough money where she could have people line up in a single file and carry her home one person at a time. Do you realize that at 5% interest a year she makes a billion just in interest? That is almost $100M a month. $3M a day, just in interest. Buy a cab company next time.

I recall reading at least one prior DUI.

Sad. I guess money really can't buy everything.

Ugh, this just pisses me off. Hire a limo driver to follow you around, you inconsiderate loser.

Man, if I hit the lottery I'd NEVER get behind the wheel of a car again. I'm not much of a drinker, I just hate to drive. And Misch is right - that is one rough looking 62. Looks closer to 75.

Local news reported this am she was arrested in Weatherford, TX which is about 30 miles west of Ft Worth. I've never seen a limo in Weatherford. While there are some very wealthy people in the area, it isn't the kind of town where you'd flaunt your money by riding around in a limo.

I am glad she was caught. Driving while intoxicated is awful.

5%. Who's paying 5% interest? I'm seeing more like .05%.

She is an idiot. Glad they arrested her and she did not hurt anyone. I have a lot of family that live out that way.

Just like when Diana Ross got arrested. You're freaking Diana Ross! Hire a driver! If I were rich, I'd bar hop all around the place and have my driver waiting for me. I know of a rich kid whose dad hires a driver for him, to take him to bars and strip clubs. Better than having your kid's mug shot in the papers for DUI!!!

Because she doesn't give a shit. In addition to it being wrong as hell, we don't drink and drive because most of us don't want the embarrassment, can't afford to lose our licences and/or we could lose our jobs, etc. What does she care? She won't lose anything. Do you think she gives a shit that we know.

I have a lot of opinions about a woman I only heard about five minutes ago.

What Anita said;
People dont tell them what to do, they tell other people what to do. They do what they want, when they want, thank you very much.
I wouldnt drive drunk because its wrong but the fact that it would ruin me financially is a real big reminder. If they do get caught, the 2k for a lawyer and the thousand for bail is pocket change. They just have their assistant take care of it.

I gather no one here has ever gone drinking before. Drink enough and your judgment is impaired. That's why we have the terms "beer goggles" and "A two at ten is a ten at two."

I would also appear that folks here assume that when anyone gets any money, the first thing they to is to behave in a tacky manner, with limos and crazy clothes and that sort of nonsense. Believe it or not, a lot of people want to continue to live as they always have, driving their Volvo and wearing their LL Bean and their Topsiders.

Yeah, I know, it's un-American, but it's true. Not everyone is a Puff Daddy or a Kimora Lee Simmons.

Hell, I'd adopt a 16 year old kid to cart my drunk ass around...to the spa, the mall the bar, whatever...just so I could checkout, space out and get my drink on. I'd cruise in a limo, a Lexus, a Pinto - who gives a rat's ass. I'm lazy and hate jail.

What Binky said. A DUI is lower threshold than a DWI. Most likely it was .08 or lower. I'm not saying it's ok, but don't throw stones if you have ever had 2 glasses of wine at dinner and then driven. Notice the report doesn't give time of day or BAP. Her name is Walton. Sucks for her. If she were 21 with boobs, the cop probably would have let her off.

She has that alcoholic look. Sad. Proves not only that money can't buy happiness, but also that the disease of addiction will always overpower our best instincts, until we are ready to change.

Not to get into it- but Walmart is trash, promotes anti-women shit by refusing Plan B and the Pill to be sold over the counter/in their pharmacy. They have horribly racist and sexist hiring and work practices. And they have succeeded in eradicating countless mom and pop small buisnesses.
So I say eff all the Waltons.
And for this looker to be receiving yet another DUI (she is on record for having at least one other), I feel I can safely surmise that the store's trashy system has obviously bled over onto the founders and their children.

Toss this rich bitch in jail and fine her something that will hurt more than her 1,000$ bail, which is nothing to her.

Binky Melnik said...

@Jasmine: I hate Walmart more than most people (I've never set foot in one, nor have I given Sam Walton a cent online or via any other business venture, either), but to hold heirs accountable for things their forefathers did? Oy. Are you into reparations, too? (If so, leave my family out. We didn't get here until the 1930s.)

I never met my maternal grandparents. I guess I'd better start hoping like craxy that they were good peeps since some nutballs will hold me accountable for whatever they did! I know they were farmers; I hope they didn't plant the garlic near the strawberries! :-o

Jasmine said...

Without mentioning the nutball comment or the reparations stuff, cause really OY VEY

I will say that my point was more to compare the trash of Walmart and the trash of a DUI driver who happens to be connected to Walmart.

Firstly- I feel I can make this connection because she is the heir and like Enty said, is reaping billions off the Walmart industry, she is involved simply by virtue of taking money from this chain of superstores.

Second- I know people who've been killed by drunk drivers. Calling a two time DUI driver trash? I think that is a pretty accurate statement to make.

Binky Melnik said...

Yeah, she LOOKS as if she's "reaping billions."

I've known people who've lost their entire families to drunk drivers. I'm from a little dink town where people think there's nothing better to do than to drink. She wasn't drunk, though; she was caught on a DUI. Same thing you've done if you've taken cold medicine. The "holier-than-everyone" attitude around here is appalling.

Let's see, she was was busted while speeding through a construction zone after a night of drinking. Rich or not, she could have killed multiple people. I don't care who she is. She is despicable.

Lelaina Pierce said...

If I had that much money, I would want a driver to drive me around EVERYWHERE, not just to the club. But I hate to drive.

Not to be judgy BUT she killed a mother of two on her first offense. That should have been her wake up call.

Binky Melnik said...

@lutefisk: Why are drunken people "despicable"? They can be mega-annoying (especially when they barf!) and noisy and embarrassing, but why are they "despicable"?

@Lelaina: Since killing a mom wasn't mentioned in this article, I went to go get the details. She *did* kill someone in 1989, though it had nothing to do with alcohol. I can't find anything about the woman having kids.

The second accident, she hit a gas meter when she had a BAC of .16.

Now here's where it gets weird: this time we're talking about here, where she was arrested after her 62 birthday party, has been variously reported as both a DUI *and* a DWI. There are more reports of it being a DWI, though. She had failed a field sobriety test after refusing to blow.

@BinkyM---she got behind the wheel of her car, intoxicated after a night of drinking. She has killed an innocent person once before. I have no problem with her drinking. It is the driving part that is so, so wrong. She is despicable. If she wants to drink no one cares. It is getting behind the wheel of the car that is the issue. A 62 year old woman should know better. She certainly could have called a cab or hired a driver for the evening.

Lelaina Pierce said...

@BinkyM -
1989 - She was speeding and struck/killed Oleta Hardin, who was 50 and DID have 2 children, although they were grown. This was ruled "an accident" but many people doubt this because she was not given a breathalyzer test. Many people believe she got out of that and vehicular manslaughter charges b/c she was a Walton. Prior to this she'd received multiple speeding tickets.
1998 - The drunken run in with the gas meter. She also reportedly told the officer on the scene "I'm Alice Walton, bitch."

Now, whether or not she was drunk in the 1989 incident is unknown but to me, this woman sounds like a habitual offender.

We all make mistakes, myself included but it doesn't seem like Alice has ever had to take personal responsibility. I wondered if there was a settlement w/ the Hardin family?

I don't give a crap whether she drinks (I drink) but considering her past history and the fact that the woman is worth 20 billion dollars, not getting a designated driver, a cab, a limo WHATEVER, is incredibly stupid.

Do we really need to be defending anyone in the Walton family for God's sakes? Allow me to play the worlds smallest violin in her honor.

Yes, we can hold heirs responsible. She has plenty of money to make a positive change to many lives but she chooses to drink. She is scum. Her whole family is scum, just like the Davis family and their wonderful children Greasy Bear and Gummy Bear. The world has enough resources for everyone's needs - not everyone's greed.
