Adele Cancels Her US Tour

Adele is suffering from some serious throat issues and has had to cancel the final leg of her US tour. She has had vocal problems on and off since she started singing professionally and I really worry that she is going to do something serious. Most of the time when a singer has something wrong they take a few weeks off and everything is fine. Think John Mayer and his recent issues. No, not the issues he has with a celebrity chef or with all the other women he sleeps with, but his vocal issues.

It all started for Adele back in May right before a Minneapolis show. So, she went home and rested and was good for a few months but now it is even worse. Apparently there are serious concerns she may damage her voice forever. Of course if she did it would be tragic, but she would still be better than half the singers out there, if not more.

On her website she really sounds sincere when she talks about canceling which I appreciate. "i have great confidence in believing you know how much this upsets me, how seriously i take it and how truly devastated and annoyed i am by this. wanting to do something so bad and not being able to is the most frustrating thing as im sure you know! my voice is weak and i need to build it back up. I’m gonna be starting up vocal rehab as soon as, and start building my over all stamina in my voice, body and mind. i will be back and im gonna smash the ball out the park once im touring again. i apologise from the bottom of my heart, sincerely i do."

Now only if she would learn to capitalize. The only odd thing other than that is her baseball reference. t seems kind of out of place. I guess she wanted to relate to the people of North America so she threw in a reference. I suppose if it had happened in South American she would have said kicked the ball into the net.

Now I am thinking she is definitely the one who had the nervous breakdown.

Oh dear Adele, please take care of yourself. No matter what the issue is. xo

It is October afterall and some lucky cities are enjoying the post-season. Sadly, not mine.

This is quite perplexing to me. She is so young. Is she a heavy smoker? How would her voice be damaged already? Professionals are trained on how to care for their vocal chords. Plus, didn't she actually major in music? She does not sound like she strains when she sings. For instance, when I hear Alicia Keys sing, her voice strains so much. She sounds like she misuses her voice. Adele, not so much.

If anyone has deets on Adele's situation, I would love to know.

Feel better, Adele! It would be a tragedy to damage that voice permanently.

I ADORE Adele, but *if* she smokes, it's hard for me to feel too bad for her -- I feel WAY worse for the fans who've paid good money and have been super-excited to see her, since she's known to put on a great show.

Again -- IF she's a smoker (and I think I read somewhere that she is, but I'm not *positive*) Her habit is killing that prized instrument, and her excuses are akin to Lance Armstrong banging his feet with a hammer and poking holes in his bike tires and claiming that he can't compete in the Tour de France due to a headache. Or something.

I mean, Aguilera is a drunken, lyric-jumbling mess, and even SHE stays away from the cigs.

She's a smoker. That along with her anxiety is killing her voice.

Ah-ha. That explains it. Never understood why amazing singers smoke. (I'm looking at you, Whitney Houston. Although, I know she smokes way more than the ciggies.)

And relaxing is SO IMPORTANT for musicians.

Adele does smoke, but it seems to be an extension of her anxiety attacks, so severe that she vomits before going on the stage for a show.

This doesn't surprise me at all. If you go to youtube and compare her live performance of Someone like you at the Brit awards almost a year ago vs the same song at the MTV awards last month, you can hear the difference. She has completely overworked her voice promoting this album in the US. She did small acoustic performances for VH1, and radio stations all over the country, in addition to her concerts. A similar thing happened to Simon LeBon this past summer and he was out of action for over a month. He's only just beginning to sound good again this past week.

Adele came back to her tour too soon, and I'm not surprised that she's cancelled the rest of it now that the Grammy awards deadline has passed. She can give up the concerts and only do the minimum amount of in person promo work with industry big wigs.

I still believe the mental breakdown was Leona Lewis, I haven't seen much or heard much about her at all this year.

Adele is fabulous and I hope she recovers quickly. I have worked with many amazing singers (no industry professionals) over the years and have a sister who does sing professionally. Smoking or not, if you don't have good technique you can damage your vocal chords while singing. I am tickled she is getting proper help. I just hope she drops the cigarettes while she is at it.

I agree, ParisSucksLiterally. Every article about Adele canceling concerts & appearances since that blind item ran has me thinking she's the one with the nerve problems. That's too bad.

I've heard/read that Adele's been pressured by her management to lose a lot of weight, too -- which might be one reason why she's so anxious, and also why she hasn't dropped the nicotine habit. :-(

Personally, I think the breakdown blind was about Adele. She's got such poise; it's easy to forget how YOUNG she is, and all that sudden fame and critical glory must be SO weird to deal with when you're still basically a kid. Remember how Fiona Apple kinda went off the deep-end around the same ago, too?

Speaking of which...GOD, I love Fiona Apple. I want her and Adele to go on tour together someday. I also want them to be friends IRL. A perfect pair, if you ask me. I can just imagine them braiding each other's hair and discussing Sylvia Plath -- and I wish I could join them.

Poor girl, I know that cigs can really help some people with severe anxiety. I just wish she'd take up yoga or meditation or some way to deal with anxiety that isn't going to hurt her! Best wishes.

Ida, if Adele and Fiona Apple toured together, my heart might burst right there. But I would die happy. :)

Get well soon, Adele. You're a breath of fresh air in this world of tuneless dance tracks.

@Parissucks -- Agreed. And if they were joined by Emmylou Harris, Neko Case, and Annie Lennox, I could croak right there in my seat with ZERO regrets. Talk about an aural orgasm.

C'mon -- make it happen, Universe!

I have to yell at Adele for a second. WHY would you smoke when your voice is your treasure? Britney smoking is one thing, but Adele, you have such a gift! Don't be an idiot.

I am among those fans who were going to see her this weekend and now just have to wait for a refund.... :(

I also know a lot about singers and singing. Some of the beautiful/stylistic things she does when she's singing contribute to damaging her voice. Singers can do these things, but not night after night. This is why Sting live in concert does not sing his songs (particularly a lot of the old Police stuff) the same way he sang the songs on the recordings. He'd lose his voice (not permanently, but not being able to do show after show) if he sang everything as originally recorded.

Adele has amazing style with her voice, but if she doesn't change how she sings some of her songs, then she really shouldn't perform live more than twice a week (and even that might damage her cords).

oh, and as far as smoking because of anxiety, she's never heard of Xanax?

No damage to vocal cords!

She has a great voice, and like someone said, it doesn't sound like she is straining herself when she sings...but all it takes is one time, really, of going on stage not properly warmed up and a little nervous, to cause some serious damage to your vocal folds. If she is a smoker on top of that, then yeah...luckily she's young enough where it is still fixable and hopefully she'll be able to quit smoking (it's hard, I know) and get into the habit of always warming up and always working on her voice. It would be sad thing if her talent was wasted.

My best vocal tips for people who talk a lot because of their jobs or maybe just their personalites, and they find their voice gets tried and scratchy at the end of the day - try speaking in a higher pitch. I don't mean squeaky - just a bit higher than you normally would. It's a lot less work for the vocal cords and it will save your vocal energy!

If you look at a picture of the human vocal mechanism, you will notice that it looks an awful lot like a woman's reproductive organs. And just like the punane, it needs love and a lot of lubrication - so drink your water and speak lightly! *L*

Sigh. I had tickets to see her next Tuesday. I was so looking forward to it, but I really hope she is ok. :(

I read an article not too many months ago. She was trying to give up the cigs and was also working with a vocal coach to learn to sing properly. I think she was probably straining her voice instead of using her diaphragm to push the sound out. (Yeah, I'm a trained vocalist.) Could be the pressure getting to her too. Rooting for her to recover and be as big a star as she wants to be!!!

Adele, put down the cancer sticks, girl.

Add Chrissie Hynde to the list of singers I'd love to see and hear again. I've always loved her voice.

Best wishes to her, of course. Her music is simply amazing. No matter what the problem is (nerves, vocal, whatever) I hope she's recovered quickly.

"I've heard/read that Adele's been pressured by her management to lose a lot of weight"

Fuckers!!! It's not like she's obese, she's just not a fucking toothpick! (Not a commentary on thin people, but on the people who are setting a shitty example by subsisting on lettuce and celery while claiming they eat cheeseburgers and fries every day.)

If she does throw up before shows, that's got to be even worse on her throat than smoking.

I had the awesome experience of getting to see her play at the Edgefield in Portland,Or about 5 weeks ago. She was talking about her vocal issues then. She was an angel to listen to live! I got so much great video including a whole tribute song to Amy W. from the Rehab album. Adele was super funny and cute on stage and spoke about her nerves as well..she said she felt chill in Portland :)

I hope she gets well soon and I will be at the next show!

Btw..for any Godfather books nerds..does Adeles throat issues remind you of Johnny Fontaine at all? The first thing I thought of ..check for a tumor! Of course I am sure she has the best docs and medicine has come a looong way since that book!

Adele had a vocal chord hemmorhage, which definitely needs rest to heal. It's from over-exertion, but I'm sure the cigs didn't help.

and she was likely referencing cricket, not baseball.
