it's really a wonder she lived as long as she did, considering the numerous health issues she's had over the years.

since i'm older and was around during her heyday, i've never been starry-eyed about liz. i never considered her a 'great' actress. her personal life was a mess----the people today who demonize angelina jolie or leann rimes would have been far more unforgiving of liz's doings when it came to married men.

what IS true is she was one of the most beautiful women who ever lived, IMO. when she was young, her face just took your breath away. and she did a tremendous amount of good for bringing AIDS out of the darkness.
RIP, liz.

Interesting comments Nancer, I never though of it that way!

In any event, RIP Liz.

I have a beautiful, blue eyed daughter, dark haired daughter named Elizabeth and her middle name would have been Taylor if my ex-husband had not been such a jerk. She did mess with married men which she should not have, she did abuse alcohol and she did not walk on water or perform any miracles. But, she stood by her friends no matter what, raised money for AIDS when it was not fashionable, loved her family and friends deeply and lived life to the fullest no matter what storm or tragedy was sent her way. I admire people that dust themselves off and try, try again. Gutsy.

I thought she was incredible and her good side far outweighed her bad, none of us are perfect.

Well said. You guys are gonna make me cry.

The two most beautiful women to have ever lived will always be Elizabeth Taylor and Maureen O'Hara. I will be inconsolable when she passes.

Rest In Peace Elizabeth...

Elizabeth Taylor was a star when that meant something more than just a reality show publicity whore with a sex tape. The only person who comes close to her today is Angelina Jolie and she's about an Oscar behind.

There aren't enough words for how upset I am about this. She was an absolute icon, and incredibly generous in all aspects of her life. The camera really did love her and she appeared in several Oscar-worthy performances.
One of the commenter here in the last few days called her a slut, and I'm going to take this opportunity to defend her. Indeed, Elizabeth married damn near every man she ever slept with, so that's really not terribly slutty if you think about it :) People love to throw at her that she married Mike Todd's best friend Eddie Fisher while he was still married to Debbie R., but anyone who has read the biographies (everyone here should read Furious Love) and indeed Eddie and Debbie themselves have said that marriage was largely arranged by the studios at the time. Truth.
In any case, this isn't a day to hate.
Miss you and love you, Liz. Hope you're having cocktails with both Mike and Richard and please say hello to my other favourite, Paul Newman. xo

A Remarkable Woman! An Icon and a Legend!

@Rocketqueen

indeed the woman was no slut. she was just a serial monogamist. nothing wrong with that! ;)

RIP Elizabeth.
Thank you for your body of work, you were truly an Icon of a bygone Hollywood.
And above all else, thank you for your activism. You took advantage of the fact that you were an opinionated loud mouthed bitch and made others aware of issues they'd have preferred stayed hidden.
May you now know the peace so often denied you in life.
And say hello to Richard for us.

was not expecting this- was quite a shock.

One of my favorite movies is "A Place In The Sun" - whenever I see it, I realize how cruel Father Time is. She was physical perfection.

Now she can be with her pal Monty again. R.I.P. Liz....

I don't think Angelina Jolie's beauty can be compared to Elizabeth Taylor's. Elizabeth was truly beautiful at 15.

when one marries as many times as liz, that person is just looking for something "out there or in someone" that will never be found. it seems later in life she realized this.

regardless, RIP.

She should inspire everyone to live life to the fullest. She loved with all her heart, which so few people do and was loyal beyond belief.

Ironic that she had such a generous heart and she died of heart failure.

The Black Cat said...

Hmmm, perhaps she shouldn't have married every man she slept with, maybe she should have just slept with them. It was a different world back then of course.
I think she most her most beautiful in the late 60's, early 70's.

Why try to compare anyone to her? She was fabulous and a real Star. She'll be sorely missed.

I wonder what little secrets she took to the grave ...
RIP Ms.Taylor

Kity Kelley's bigoraphy on her, Last Star, was excellent.

I don't think Liz can be compared to anyone today, none of them come even remotely close to her

shakey said...

I don't think anyone comes close in this day and age to the Golden Age of Hollywood. Michael Caine, maybe, but he's more of a character actor than leading man status.

Thus passes Hollywood into the twilight. Hopefully she's partying with Rock, Monty, Richard, etc. etc.

Goodbye Elizabeth my dearest.
Thank you for everything.
I will drink that martini to you tonight.
Thanks for that magical July 4th when I was a kid. I'll write about it someday, just as you asked. First Natalie, then Joan, John, Cary, John H., and even Frank and Dean. Paul, Elia too, now you.

They told me that when you're young - you get sick of going to weddings. As you get older you get tired of funerals. I get it now. Damn - I'm losing all my heroes.
Tonight- take a second to unplug from the world and play "My Way" by Frank. That's what a legend is about.

Oh Himmmm...what stories you have! Please share them with us, too :)

RIP, la Liz. And thank you for supporting AIDS research.

Maybe now she is reunited with her true love, Mike Todd.

I so admire her life, her ups and downs her lovers her come backs. I wish I had 10% excitment in my whole life like she would in one year.

And even at the end she was twittering away having a grand old time. And don't even get me started on the jewlery.

She was a one of a kind a Haley's Comet. She truly was a modern day Cleopatra. I hope her and Richard are whooping it up in the heavens.

Himmmm said...

Just because you asked...

As a kid, my parents were involved in everything from Hollywood to politics. At a reception for John Warner, I sat with Elizabeth and met her. She fawned and made over me and I loved it - such a precocious kid she said. Invited my family to her July 4th party that year. Wow. Amazing. I didn't know half of the legends there, but I had fun entertaining them with my crazy stories and being a kid running with sparklers.

Flash forward to early 90s. I'm at a pal's July 4th party, and Elizabeth was there too. Though my date was beautiful, I spent all my time with the "old folks". In fact, I sat with them sipping wine all night as kids ran with sparklers. The warm summer breeze blowing on the patio. It was like a scene out of Gatsby. Elizabeth got tipsy and started spilling secrets with a laugh. I got tipsy and joined in. She told me about James Dean and Monty Clift. About Marilyn, Bogart, and Newman. Told me stories that blew me away. I told her my stories and about my first kiss and vandalizing the Fox lot late one night with a movie star. She said there's nothing new under the sun! It was like a night in 1940 Hollywood. The night wore on but magic never wore off, fireworks exploded. I made new pals, shared secrets (and kept them!). As she left, she said: "one day after we're all dead and gone, you write about this night". About the passing of a torch, and how if I had only been 20 years younger, I would have been one of those husbands!

She made me promise - and I did. And one day, I'll do it. As I helped her to the car, she turned and said: Drink a martini for me when you think of this night.
And I will.
The next week, I got a leather folder delivered to me. It had a photo of me, her, and four Old Hollywood pals in it. A simple hand-written note said: To you T, from a woman who loves him.
It sits on my desk every day.

My second daughter's middle name? Elizabeth. And one day I will write about that amazing night.
Sorry to bore you- just please give a smile if you think of this legend. She deserved it.

Omg himmm that story made me teary. How wonderful! I will buy anything you write, that was fantastic.
Liz did love children, and if it weren't for her health difficulties that came so early, she would have had more. She had something special, that woman.

bluebonnetmom said...

@ Himmmm - Your story made me teary as well. Please write it one day. I am glad the woman I named my baby girl after was as wonderful as I dreamed she was.

Doug Kenney said...

Enough already. Elizabeth Taylor was a hosebag garbage slut who became an drunk and a drug addict who befriended pedophiles. She's been repulsive my entire life, and now she's fucking dead. Good riddance to bad rubbish.

Unknown said...

@Doug -- what a lovely, forgiving and Christian sentiment. Jesus would be proud.

She was a beautiful person who made a difference. Was she perfect? Of course not. None of us are, and no one has the right to judge who has not walked a mile in her shoes.

For me, she was the epitome of beauty, grace and she sure knew how to live life.

Blessings, Miss Elizabeth. You will be missed, and you will be remembered with love, always.

Don't even mention Angelina Jolie and Elizabeth Taylor in the same sentence.
"The problem with people who have no vices is that generally you can be pretty sure they're going to have some pretty annoying virtues."
I must respectfully agree.
"Don't call me an icon, honey. An icon is something you hang in a Russian church. Call me Dame Elizabeth, or call me an aging movie star. I am not an icon."
I must respectfully disagree.

@Himmmm, thanks for that story, even if I now have tears falling off my nose!

@Himmmmm THANK YOU! That made me teary as well. She is one of our last icons and seemed like a real person. I will miss her. Someday PLEASE share what she said about James Dean and Monty. I loved her and Monty together they lit up the screen. Thanks again.

I don't care for Doug's comment, but let's not label him a troll.

I was never a Liz Taylor fan, but may she RIP.

PotPourri said...

Well, Doug may be Larry Fortensky in disguise. He's probably not a troll though. Some people call her like they see her. That's about the way I think of Angelina Jolie.

lutefisk said...

Regardless of what people may or may not think of her she JUST passed away. Why speak ill of the recently deceased?

MadLyb said...

This is so incredibly sad. I loved her in 'A Place in the Sun'. I'd never thought she was a particularly good actress until I saw, 'Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf?' and I don't think I've ever seen a more powerful on screen performance than she gave. Ever.

She's definitely the most beautiful woman I've ever seen, but more than that, she loved animals, and people, and had a kind heart.

She lived dramatically, loved deeply, and fought for what she believed in.

She seemed to have suffered more than her share of pain, illness and tragedy.

I'll never forget how she moved people towards compassion and giving and away from the shame, judgment and scorn that was largely the atmosphere surrounding those stricken with AIDS.

In the end, she lived a full, fascinating life. It's the things you don't do that you regret. RIP Dame Elizabeth. Outshine the angels and have a laugh and a drink or two with your beloved Richard, Mike, Rock and Monty while your at it.

Elizabeth so breathtakingly beautiful from such a young age. The only other actress who could match her early years was Ava Gardner. She certainly lived her life to the fullest. RIP, Elizabeth.

RIP Dame Elizabeth -- Your spirit was as great as your beauty; your loyalty was as strong as your will to live; you never backed down on your own convictions and lived them fully. You did it "Your Way", and it will never be done that way again.

She outlived Michael Jackson now that is what is truly fraked up. I always pictured Jacko attending her funeral dressed up like Capt. Crunch.
