Breast Milk Ice Cream - Seriously

When I first saw the headline that breast milk ice cream was on sale I thought it was just some artificial flavor but was going to post about it and have a laugh or two. Umm, it turns out there really is breast milk ice cream and if you have $20 sitting in your pocket and happen to be in Covent Garden in London you can buy yourself some. The flavor is actually called Baby GaGa and it is actual breast milk that was expressed in the store and then combined with vanilla and lemon zest. Apparently the store is hoping that if people try the flavor they will love it and it will encourage women to breast feed. Umm yeah. If anyone is in London and has tried this or has a friend who has, you have to let us know how it was. If you click over to the BBC site they have video.

I would dearly love to know how they got that past the health and safety regulations. Most of us aren't interested in swallowing the bodily fluids of strangers, for good reason.

Honestly, it might sound strange at first, but I really don't think it is. I mean fuck, we eat products made from the milk of ANOTHER SPECIES every day, which is really kind of gross if you think about it.

campchristy said...

Um, yeah, but I also eat the meat of other species, too. So, until the regular eating of human meat, human milk, etc, becomes commonplace among humans, I think I'll abstain.

ITA RQ. We drink cow breast milk so it's not a stretch. I can see people buying it for their kids that are bfing. It's not in the US so our views are different. In other cultures they have wet nurses.

I don't want to drink another woman's breastmilk. First of all, anything a mother eats can flavour it, like garlic for example. Ick.

I can't wait for the Goopster to blog about this!

no thanks, I'll pass.

I agree with Rocket Queen.

Humans are meant to only drink human milk, really. I'm not saying *I* don't put bovine cream in my coffee, but this isn't too terribly outlandish.

I'm NOT giving up my Haagen Dazs Five for this, but it's NOT the most disgusting thing I've ever heard of injesting. Sorry, dudes, but hot dogs are waaaaaaay worse. :-)

Um, WE do NOT drink milk from animals. That's just gross. What am I, a baby cow?!?!??!?! Maybe a baby goat?!?!?! Gross!

Oh for the love of! Are you serious?! Do we really need this kind of ice cream?! I'm on board with Enty as far if anyone out there has tried it, please do tell us how it was.

Oh, no no no no no. I knew I should not have read any further. I prefer to live in La La Land when it comes to food.

But now I am giving up dairy completely. *gags*

Ok this is just gross!!! I can't even handle catching sight of someone breastfeeding in public - I will not be trying this ice cream.

Gives new meaning to "express yourself."

@ Tim....LMAO....that is perfect. Since women can transmit HIV to their children in breast milk, I don't know about the health safety of this either.

I would have to agree with RocketQueen and amoteaflote, in theory. I would not eat human milk ice cream. And I would hate a day without cheese. But really, we drink the milk from cows, and most of us drank human milk as babies. It shouldn't seem so gross.

Eww...

Just think about what other popular foods might be infused with other bodily fluids after this!

cyberisis said...

Yeah ewe...a while back there was a couple in NYC in the paper who wanted to sell breast milk cheese. I think they were giving it away because they couldn't legally sell it...

Murphy Brown 2020 said...

Awww. C'mon, guys! Breastfeeding isn't gross in itself. I strongly feel that there ain't nuthin' wrong with breastfeeding in public if the mother has tossed a blanket or something over her ta-tas. Babies gotta eat!

chihuahuense said...

yeah, the risk catching something > me wanting to try it, so that'll be a no for me. And re: the garlic--I eat shitloads of garlic, and after I would eat a meal laden with garlic both of my babies would do this crazy "mmm....mmm...mmm..." thing when they were nursing. Only happened right after I ate a bunch of garlic. So while garlic-infused milk made into ice cream does not sound appealing to me, maybe the babies would go gaga over it. I can't see this getting passed the regulations in America, though.

sunnyside 1213 afreakingmen. gag indeed. Practice or theory the thought of this makes me ill.

Pass.

Anna Geletka said...

Eh, I'd try a spoonful. It usually takes a lot of milk to pass any diseases, so just a taste would be ok.

I can't believe you guys aren't even curious? How many of you tried your own? When I'm breastfeeding I'm definitely trying my own.

Don't forget the ones who believe in eating one's placenta after giving birth.

There are recipes out there for that, I was surprised to find out!

chihuahuense said...

@jp, if you think that is gross, check this out:

There are enough comparisons of women to cows already, thank you very much.

I am breastfeeding now and this ick factor is wayyy overblown. It's just boobs and milk folks. Breastmilk is sweet, like sweet cream flavored ice cream. I hope ya'll are gagging!

:) we are all animals at the end of the day.

Well, I'm in London and wouldn't be completely opposed to trying it.

That said, it's in Covent Garden, it's "quirky" and it's in been in the news which means it'll be crazily busy, hyped beyond belief and there's no way I'm spending that amount on ice cream.

@ kathrynnova: omg bitty SOOOOO funny :)

I've been reading comments on this site forever, and am finally writing one on frickin' breast milk ice cream.

Anyhoo, I have a chef friend whose wife is a big milk producer ('his' terms, he was endearing though:), and they would sell alot of the milk to a local hospital for needy infants. But, he also had a lot leftover, and two kids. So he experimented.

He made breast milk cheese, (different types of cheese, we're from WI ya know hey)...ice cream, he'd make shakes for his kids. And that was just it, it was all just for HIS kids. Which I think makes much more sense than publicly sharing your milk for consumption.

It ain't right.

I'm not opposed to breastmilk ice cream, but I'd rather the breast milk go to a milk bank for babies who need breastmilk (i.e mother's who can't lactate, babies who lost their mother, etc.)

I'm breastfeeding my 2 month old and I've tasted my milk. It's sweet, really sweet. That's why babies like it!

And guess what - I also ate my own placenta! Well, kind of. I had it dried out and encapsulized so I could take them as pills. And it helped balance my post pregnancy hormores.

See, there's this thing called google, and you can use it to find information about different topics (such as consuming placentas). Try it, you might actually become...gasp...educated!!

sunnyside1213 said...

@ Monica, I also tried a taste of my breast milk. I agree, very sweet.
However, no ice cream for me.

Why should it cost $20 to encourage people to breastfeed? I would rather see the money donated to help feed starving babies and animals.
