A little over the line? I think it is kind of nice to see everyone looking a little uncomfortable. I think people expected Ricky to tone down his monologue after last year. He didn't.

I didn't watch it but on this morning's TV news it appeared that he was canned/cut after about half-way through the show.
Anyone know the scoop?
Hulu won't show in Canada, so I can't watch it, but I'm glad he stuck to his guns and said what he wanted to say.

i loved him! he was downright snarky, but his timing is impeccable, and he pulled it off beautifully.
I didn't watch much of the show - but I tuned in for the monologue! I thought it was great and I did enjoy seeing people a little uncomfortable. I'm sure some of them have a great sense of humor and the other half have a very lofty sense of self and can't believe anyone would ever poke fun at that group.
Absolute best moment was the quip about in-the-closest Scientologists. Hope Ricky watches his back this week - he's probably on their target list now.
I thought he was hilarious and those people deserve to be taken down a notch. Like someone else said, they need to realize they are NOT curing cancer, they pretend for a living.

I didn't get a chance to watch the golden globes, but I heard a bit about it on the news this morning, so I knew it had to be good. All I gotta say is

Ricky did his monologue and comedy for the people at home, NOT the people in that room.

I saw it...just for the monologue and the funny remarks he was supposed to say as a way to introduce the actors but after the monologue he only appeared two or three times and he looked a bit pissed. I mean was the big deal? the tourist WAS sh*t! I remember that most of the actors were laughing, with the whole Xenu thing...well, on tv I saw a lot of people laughing (The whole black swan table).
I LOVE HIM! Shot straight from the hip. Did not give a F what was thought. If they want safe, they need to go with Barbara Walters and her cotton ball questions. The Globes knew what they were getting.
As for the comment about the Scientololoonies-Would LOVE to have been in some of their meetings and living rooms last night with all of that. Seriously, for some, that closet got an extra lock or two today.

Hope Randy and Evi have a place for him to hide out for awhile.
I don't feel bad for ANY of the people he lambasted, and I applaud him for doing it!

I personally loved the zings he got in. The only person they dared go to after getting zinged was Johnny Depp. And he was reluctantly laughing. I would have given ANYTHING for a shot of Nicole's face after the Scientology remark.
How much of a CDAN addict have I become that I immediately thought of everyone here when Ricky made the famous Scientologists joke. I loved that moment. I loved that he made everyone in the room uncomfortable. I loved that he started the show with a full beer on the podium.
Yes it seemed that he was gone for a while, but he did come back and introduce Tom Hanks/Tim Allen and Tina Fey/Steve Carell and a few others in the second half of the show, with his jacket off and another drink in his hand. I wish he would come back next year.
One of my friends posted to his Facebook that Ricky crossed the line at the end of the show when he said 'thank God I'm an atheist'. THAT was the most offensive thing? It wasn't even an original joke.
FS -- that last bit was my favorite part of the show. :-)
Personally, I find it more offensive when celebs tearfully thank the Lord or whatever when they win awards. I mean, I'm actually an Atheist like Ricky, but if I *did* believe in a omniscient deity, I would HOPE that s/he/it had better things to do than make sure some overprivileged, clueless person wins a hunk of metal.
Loved him! He didn't want to play along with all the carefully constructed facades. Tim Allen looked like he would kill him, but Gervais was spot on all night. They won't ask him back and that's a shame.

Could not believe when he said "it was a big year for 3-D movies, seems like everything this year was 3-Dimensional...except the characters in The Tourist." OMG! Ha!!! That was to me the most bitingly dry thing he said. Lurved it
Oh and the last bit about thanking god for being an atheist,I had never heard that before and thought it was hilarious!
Was slightly annoyed when Robert Downey Jr said "Except for the dark energy and tones of sinisterness, this show is having a really good vibe tonight" or something like that, in response to Gervais's jokes.
It was just as annoyed for him to be so humorless as when Sean Peen defened that actor that one time at the awards ceremony
There were more than ten times where I looked at my husband and said "Did he really just say that?" as I bent over with uncontrollable laughter. And you know what? LOVED IT! These aren't fire fighters & school teachers here, they are performers. And let's face it, most of what he said most normal people had probably thought at one point or another. Thank you, Ricky!

It's nice when ANYONE can recognize their faults & have the ability to laugh at themselves. To me, it was a little irritating seeing how many people got their panties in a wad. Lighten up, people! He didn't really say anything that wasn't true, let's face it.

I fell asleep very early around 8:30 so I never got to see amy of it other than on the news and here/online.
Loved every snark filled second of Ricky. I guess the painted people in the room had never heard Ricky, Stephen and Karl on the radio, podcast or Ricky Gervais show on HBO. He rips Karl a new one constantly...and he likes Karl.
Suck it up Hollywood, the pretty painted crowd showed that they were like the prettily wrapped presents under the holiday tree at the mall. All pretty on the outside, empty on the inside.

I only saw this monologue, Ricky is fab as per usual. He definately succeeded in making people feel uncomfortable, which is what he does best. DeNiro's face is priceless when Ricky did the Hef joke.

I almost never watch an entire awards show, and he was the ONLY reason I watched last night. He was spot on, and 100% amazing!!! I was also slightly annoyed by RDJ's comment, and I really love him, so that was disappointing.
@jax - nice quote from Simon Pegg - very true! I sincerely loved that Gervais didn't kiss anyone's ass - it was a great show. Unfortunately, I don't think he'll be back next year, but on the plus side, then I won't have to watch three hours of crap to see the 15 minutes of awesomeness from the host!
Also - just to clarify - I was disappointed by RDJ's comment, not Ricky's. RDJ has been clean for so long now, I think it is totally safe to make fun of him - heck, it's not like he was in rehab last year or anything! :)

At the end of the day THEY ARE JUST JOKES! That's what kills me the most. He's a comedian, and not a safe one, at that, so for anyone there to get upset or offended is absolutely ridic. These are other performers that have (most likely) had a role that was controversial, this, to me, is not much different.
The fact that they can't laugh at themselves one night a year just reinforces the fact that they are surrounded by yes men and syncophants all the time. Get over yourselves!!!!!!

I LOVED him! The fact that he refuses to kiss the asses of the Hollywood elite just makes him awesome. He just says what everyone is thinking or actually already knows, so good for him! I don't think he'll be hosting next year though...*L*
I think the fact RDJ has been clean for so long is the reason the joke *was* offensive. I thought most of it was just downright mean. However ...

"Better" is relative, but as Gervais was in another culture, they might have thought writing lines for him that wouldn't offend the whole room. (Scientologists aside).
All that said, I think the whole thing was done on purpose, including the return jibes from the celebrities. Does everyone think anyone is that quick with witty comebacks? What is everyone talking about this morning? When has a Golden Globes presentation EVER had this much press?

I didn't watch the show, but that monologue was hilarious. My favorite part was about Hef and his new finance gagging. If the powers that be want to make these awards shows so proper, they will lose their audience. People know they can catch all the best moments the next day on youtube or Hulu. You need a great host if people are going to suffer thru for 3+ hours.

SnowCherries, I had the same thought about him watching his back about the Scientology comments, even as I was doubled over in laughter and having to explain to my parents what was so funny!
Bloody BRILLANT! The awards were bogus and he just pointed out the flaws like Angelina Jolie getting a nomination, he is the only reason why I watched the show.
And okay all you haters of RG, tune into Oscars and then you will see edgy is brillant which the Oscars won't be.
@PRGG, the Oscars are meant to have a sense of decorum. They are always dull, but at least they're not mean-spirited. I don't watch any of these award shows -- it's a hall of mirrors for narcissists -- but having read Gervais' comments this morning, I think they were inappropriate in this culture and for that event.
I also think the whole thing was planned. Stupid, for the most part, but planned.
He was awesome! He only said what EVERYONE sits at home and says all the time.. what we all say on here in comments every day! It was brilliant. Too bad those up-themselves stars can't take a joke. Learn to laugh at yourselves people! Life is too important to be taken seriously.
Ricky Gervais had announced before hosting the GG that it would be his second and last time. So, he didn't have any bridge to save. The Golden Globes are a joke anyway.
It might have been even more amazing that Christian Bale and Robert De Niro received an award and lambasted the HFPA. It's a pity that EL doesn't have any good gossip on this association.
The oscars are going to seem so boring after last night!

I like RG, his humor is snarky, it is part of him and his "act", the Golden Globes people knew that, so I am not sure what was expected. And since someone brought it up I wondered if some of it was scripted, Ricky mouthed "sorry" to Tom Hanks and Tim Allen when they came out, I am not 100% sure though.
I did cringe a little at Robert De Niro's joke though.
I personally have never watched more than 10 minutes of the Globes - and only tuned into to watch his opening remarks - they were HILARIOUS. Anyone who tries to sell their personality / lifestyle (or terrible movies - or BOTH) to the media shouldn't have the right to censor commentary - they've put their lives out there and need to accept that they are a target. Go RICKY!
I can only second what everyone (well, almost everyone) is saying - he was bloody brilliant! I LOVE him!
British humor is far superior to ours in the States. We can't take much of anything risque or just flat out hilariously honest. I am happy to continue my Anglophilia.
That said, I didn't watch. I feel like a partypooper but I really can't bear these awards things anymore.
Was this really any more 'offensive' than when Sascha Baron Cohen came out of the rafters at an award show (was it the Grammy's?) in a toga thing and lowered himself ass first into Eminem's face? Or Madonna famewhore kissing Britney? It's all for ratings and reality TV is basically lowering the standards more and more. Gervais simly said what gossip sites and the message boards say everyday - the ones we all devour and comment on.
So someone really does know the truth and isn't afraid to say it...in front of those who are trying to hide it!!
It was so refreshing to have a host that was willing to be himself and not modify his comedy to please the seriously over inflated egos in that room. The auidence at home loved it.
I feel sorry for Oscar -- there is no way the program is going to be able to keep my attention with the dull hosts James and Anne...yawn!
