March 23, 2012

It is still over a year away and a truly awful date, but at least there is now a release date for The Hunger Games. I have no idea why Lionsgate chose that week for the release. It seems like it is a week late for Spring Break? That is the only reason I can think of for them releasing it in the third week of March. Unlike summer though, Spring Break is not a big movie going time.

Anyway, I am just happy the movie will be on the big screen. Oh please oh please do not screw it up. Do not temper the violence or try and make the love story what it is not. Just be true to the book and everything will be good. No casting decisions have been announced yet.

I haven't read the books, however if I remember reviews correctly, isn't this the series that's been called "everything 'Twilight' could have been?"
Mind you, I didn't read and won't read the Twilight series. (And I'll read almost anything)

@Sylvia: I had the same thought...

I cannot speak too highly of these books. Be forewarned though, these books and characters will get into your head and stay there long after you've finished the 3rd book. They are intense. I think Eddie Izzard would be perfect to play Haymitch. He's the right age and looks like the character is described. I know I also said Eddie should play the Wizard of Oz the other day, too. I'm not a crazy fan who thinks he should be in everything, but he really would be great in both of these. Craig Ferguson also might be good for Haymitch. He's a better actor than most people know.

Am I the only one who thinks it's funny to have a release date for a movie that hasn't been cast yet, let alone filmed?

I am hopeful that this will be good. I loved the books.

Oh so exciting! Can't wait till they start casting, even though I'll probably not approve of the casting choices. This makes me want to re-read the books now ...

Hooray! I loved the books. Hoping the movie will be good but is the movie ever as good as the book?

I'll answer my own question - rarely & that's usually because the book isn't very good.

My favorite suggestions thus far are Kristin Chenoweth for Effie and Robert Downey Jr as Haymitch. If they could make this happen I would be estatic.

Excellent books...great, thoughtful young adult lit with action, philosophy, and rich characterizations. And no vampires!!! The choice of Gary Ross as writer/director is outstanding. Gary will make it a class act all around...but a year is no time in filmmaking terms; that is a lot of pressure for a movie of this scope. I hope they get an amazing production designer to bring The Games to life!

I LOVED this series ALMOST as much as I loved Harry Potter. The characters and storyline make Twilight look pathetic. What I loved best was that the heroine was not portrayed as some vapid, pathetic girl obsessed with a boy. The story had meaning.

I heard that the author was going to have a fair amount of control over the film, although I don't know what that really means.

PLEASE DON'T SCREW IT UP HOLLYWOOD!

I think they'll have to make a little more out of the Gale love story pre-heading off to the games... In the books, most of what you know about it is via her thoughts, so it'll be hard to convey that w/o either doing some build-up romance stuff or some flashback romance stuff.

I hope they re-write the script for the ending of the 3rd book a bit. Worst ending ever.

But I'm super excited to see this is getting made into a movie. Overall loved the trilogy, with the exception of the end. ;)

I actually read the books after Enty wrote the thing about it being considered "young adult" fiction. I LOVED these books so much that I am also afraid they will ruin it. I was just thinking today that the girl who plays Hayley on Modern Family could be a good Katniss because it is a way different character than we are used to seeing her play and she must be a pretty good actress to be with all those talented people.

Lian - I could definitely see Robert Downey Jr as Haymich.
