Matthew Broderick Coming To A TV Screen Near You
Apparently Matthew Broderick wants to resurrect his career and is willing to come to the altar of television to do it. Not content to be seen only in plays anymore, Broderick finally agreed to star in a television show. They were all beneath him previous to this one. I believe in the John Lithgow school of acting. If you are a great actor you should be able to move between movies, television and theatre and succeed at all of them. The show Broderick is doing is called Beach Lane. For about two seconds I got really excited thinking they were turning Summer Rental into a television show. If you got that joke, then you and I should go drinking together.
It turns out though this Beach Lane show is produced by Lorne Michaels and written by the head writer from NewsRadio so it has possibilities. Instead of running a radio station for a rich owner it is running a newspaper for a rich owner in the Hamptons. I'm guessing we also probably won't be treated to Stephen Root every week, but one can hope and pray.
Matthew Broderick doesn't need to "resurrect" his career. He's enjoyed enviable success on Broadway for many years.
ReplyDeleteSounds more like Beach Lame to me. Just picturing people wearing Lacoste with popped collars, sweaters wrapped around the neck, shorts. Talking and laughing in clipped upper class accents.
ReplyDeleteEnty, here is you're drinking buddy! We're go drinking and have a whole mess of Scully's Catches of the Day!!!
ReplyDelete-Ryan
Uh... I haven't been drinking yet. That should obviously say we'll go drinking together, not we're... and it should say your, not you're. Uh... I've had a rough week. Anyway, love Summer Rental!
ReplyDelete@ Ryan, please share the joke. I have never seen Summer Rental.
ReplyDeleteRip Torn was in Summer Rental. I know now why I missed this. I was out of the country when it came out.
ReplyDeleteJohn Candy is an Air Traffic Controler who almost has a meltdown and hasn't had a vacation in 15 years, so his boss forces him to take a vacation. He rents a beach cabin for a month, and hurts his leg so his family starts going off and having fun without him. (Beach Lame). Anyway, he starts hanging around Scully's (Rip Torn) resteraunt and drinking and taking sailing lessons. He eventually sails Scully's restraunt (a giant sailed ship) and beats his evil landlord in the local regatta. Trust me, it's awesome.
ReplyDeleteOh, and it has an 11 year old Joey Lawrence in it, as well as one of the girls from The Goonies if you're into that.
ReplyDeleteMatthew, I'm underwhelmed. Really.
ReplyDeleteThanks Ryan. Think I will rent it.
ReplyDeleteGee I was hoping for a Ferris TV series with Matthew in the old Jeffrey Jones role as Principal. Well another great casting opportunity missed!
ReplyDeleteI love Summer Rental!!! John Candy, Richard Crenna, Rip Torn...

...oh, and I'll give Mr. Brodericks' new show the once-over.
ReplyDeleteI'll give it a try. Something about Matthew just bothers me, though. I think it's his sour face all the time, as if we're lucky he's deigning us all with an appearance at all.
ReplyDeleteI loved the sunburn scene in summer rental.. that has stayed with me for a long time and I think of it anytime I go somewhere on holiday and try and catch some rays.
ReplyDeleteHis character is running a newspaper?!?
ReplyDeleteOy, why didn't they just make him the manager of a buggy-whip factory?
wow, I hadn't thought about that Summer Rental in years! I liked it, but there is no way I could remember a whole song from it! You all have hella memories.
ReplyDeleteRyan, how's your wifey? Doing better I hope!
LOL@Ivan
ReplyDeleteWonder if it's going to be a Paper Chase type of show??
@chihuahuaense - ugh, 'wifey' just reminds me of Tila Tequila now!! Speaking of which, big gossip on her today, so it looks like Enty has a ban on news about her!!
ReplyDeletei'm w/ Do You Come w/ the Car...what do you mean, 'resurrect'? he's been a successful stage actor for yrs.
ReplyDeleteTelevision was never beneath him. He has made appearances several times on SNL, 30 Rock and did The Music Man for Disney on ABC. Perhaps the reason he didn't do a tv series had more to do with not wanting to leave NYC. There aren't many sitcoms taped in NY.
ReplyDeleteI forgot about Summer Rental!! I loved that movie.
ReplyDeletelol, sorry, my intentions were never that mental image :)
