Today's Blind Items - Kindness

I don't know if you have read the reports from California but our animal shelters are overwhelmed with Chihuahuas. I blame Paris Hilton. In the last 12 months just in Los Angeles, 4700 of them have been taken in by shelters. Anyway, there has been an idea to ship some of the dogs to other shelters around the country to even things up. This usually annoying B list movie and television actress who is on/off/on a hit network drama and who has been doing nice things lately paid for the cost of flying 25 of the dogs to shelters in New Hampshire with another 45 to follow. Shelters in New Hampshire have waiting lists of people who want the dogs so this is a very good thing.

  1. This sounds like Katherine Heigl to me.

  2. How is this blind? There have been several stories about Heigl doing this.

  3. Yeah I was going to say KH too but is she really a b list movie star?

  4. Yes, it's Katherine Heigl.

  5. Not a blind - magazine articles have documented this. Glad to know about it anyway.

I almost like Katherine Heigl for this.

  7. IF SHE LIKES ANIMALS...SHE'S OK WITH ME

  8. Good for her.

In general people, acts of animal cruelty and abandonment have been WAY up in the last year. Any support or donation to your local shelters are always appreciated, and especially now :)

  9. This isn't a blind- google "Katherine Heigl animal shelter" and you'll see it all over the place.

  10. It's Heigl, it's been on the news.

Chihuahua's are very popular with the Latino population and as the California economy tanks, the poorest populations are the hardest hit and they're giving up their pets.

I was at the OC Animal Shelter a few months ago, it services the city of Santa Ana which has one of the highest density of residents from south of the border in California. The number of Chihuahuas available was shocking.

  11. Do I have to like her now?

    ReplyDelete
  12. There is a waiting list for those dogs in NH now, which is great. And some of the people who come in looking to get those dogs are going to take home another deserving dog instead.

    So good on KH.

  13. Its become pretty common to ship dogs to places where they will be adopted. I live in upstate New York where we apparently are very good at adopting adult dogs. Southern states give the dogs a month then volunteers transport the best of them to animal rescues here. Now if we could just find a state that wants our cats! Our shelters are overflowing.

  14. Dontcha hate it when someone you are sure is a jerk turns out to be kinda nice in some small way?? ; )

    ReplyDelete
  15. This makes me cry with gratitude. Bless you KH.

I have three dogs, one is a chihuahua and another a chihuahua/whippet mix (a chiwhippet!). If I could, I'd adopt several more chihuahuas, but no room in my apartment.

Chis get a bad rap--they're really wonderful little dogs (when treated right).

  16. Oh dear - I've been burned. I asked for a kindness blind but the answer is Katherine Heigl. OK - I will not say one mean thing about her today. Good job, Katherine. Thanks for the kindness blind.

  17. Why is this blind? I saw it on the news.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I wish I could adopt a chihuahua, my husband would love to have one...but our 2 cats, Princess Babette and Senor Fluffybutt, would never forgive us...

  19. I have to wonder why we are seeing an increasing number of "blinds" that aren't really blind at all, that mainstream press has covered with the celeb's name.

I'm sad to see this additional sign of changes in what's been such a fabulous gossip site.

  20. haha @ ms cool, i guess you need to be more precise in what you ask for!

and yeah, course its heigel - read it on dlisted over the week, no?

    ReplyDelete
  21. This isn't even blind... Heigl

  22. Anonymous2:42 PM

    Not blind!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Not that I am a fan of her work, but how is KH not A-list? Emmy winner, long running top TV show, opens big box office movie, lands covers of "real" magazines (In Style, Allure, etc -- not just tabloids). Just asking.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I agree with everyone that this is not blind...I am pretty sure they mentioned somewhere last week (I thought on this site, but maybe it was on T.V. or something?). Henry - I agree with you. I think she should at least be A-list for T.V. and I am not a big fan of hers either. She is starting to grow on me a little...

    ReplyDelete
  25. Definitely read this a bit ago, its Heigl

    ReplyDelete
  26. I thought heigl's whole adopting thing was for publicity. Thats what I heard anyway

    ReplyDelete
  27. I want to haaatteee Heigle now she goes adopting babies and saving yappy little dogs.

    Crap, I.almost.like.her.

  28. KH.No news though.Read it on celebitchy almost a week ago.

  29. Good for Heigl. Other animal lovin' celebs ought to follow suit now.

What was the name of that one celeb that was a PETA spokesperson at somem point but then got reported on for dumping a litter of puppies off at an animal shelter?

    ReplyDelete
  30. The chihuahua rescue woman was on NPR in the past few weeks (local NPR... KCRW or KPCC)... it is Heigl.

The best part of this blind is calling her B LIST. That will rile the star of the super huge blockbuster Zzyx ROAD.

    ReplyDelete
  31. OK, if anyone wants to dump on anyone else for this being posted, then dump on me--I sent it to Enty in the first place & suggested that he make it a kindness, thinking that it might get some more attention for a Good Cause, and if patting someone on the back in a BI helps, why not? I also thought it was interesting in light of the fact that KH isn't exactly the most popular person here, but obviously she has a good side, so let's encourage it, shall we? (IIRC, she & her mom have a charity devoted to animals that's named after her older brother, who died when he was 15 and who loved animals very much; as a animal lover and cat person myself, I tend to think that anyone else who loves animals at least has some good qualities. Oh, and did I mention I'm originally from New Hampshire? There's another connection for you...)

In other words, this one is largely my fault, so don't pick on Enty or start complaining that he's losing his edge, because it was my bright idea--yes, he put it up, but I put the bug in his ear in the first place. *steps down off soapbox*

    ReplyDelete
  32. MCH - That was Dominique Swain! A CDAN alumni. I wonder if that is why Enty never posted the story?!?

  33. @ Robin the Mad Photographer
If it makes you feel any better, I hadn't read it anywhere else and I have a whole iGoogle tab devoted to my favorite gossip blogs. ;)

    @ Rose
Yes, that is the girl. I had no idea who she was before i read the article. I get REALLY irritated when I read things like that and when people don't take responsibility to spay/neuter their pets. I was heavily involved with a rescue group for about three years so this is a topic that will make me flip on my b**** switch.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Never liked her...BUT, if she is an animal lover and advocate I have to admire her.

My mom always told me to be cautious with people who don't like animals...good advice. If someone can't have empathy for an animal, they are suspect to me.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Yay for KH and yay for a blind we could guess.

  36. A douche is a douche is a douche,

    Ms. Heigl.

    ReplyDelete
  37. ONLY 70 chihuahuas??? Sheesh!
Seriously, I am a total cat person and both of my kittehs
"The most BEATIFUL cat in the whole wide world" and
The "CUTEST cat in the whole wide world"
have been adopted by Yours Truly.

Shelter animals make the BESTEST pets (and friends). I'm so happy we found each other!

Robin, completely OT, but your avatar is the BEST! I love me some Amanda Palmer something fierce! Did you take that photo yourself?!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Thanks MCH I am one of the few who hadn't heard about KH's act of kindness.

I do not like her but what she did was commendable.

  40. Simmah Robin.
thing is, this isn't a Blind. It would have been just as effective if Ent wrote one of his charming summaries of the situation.
No one is upset that I can see, Enty even gave us an extra blind.
You have to keep in mind that a lot of the folks who come here do so for blind items. Not 'it was reported everywhere else on the planet days ago' items
    I agree, good cause

    ReplyDelete
  41. Yeah, this is Heigl. I've been in Rescue for a lot of years and she's always active. The transport groups (someone drives 200 miles, drops the dog off with me, I drive 200 miles, and give the dog to someone else, etc til the dog gets to its destination) are going crazy. I do German Shepherd Rescue, and this is the first time I can remember there being fewer Shepherds/mixes than there are Chihuahua/mixes in the shelters. JetBlue is doing a lot of transports for free too.

  42. The Chihuahua problem is huge all over the country but it's especially bad here in CA, many elderly had them and got sick, the foreclosure of homes and job loss has made surrendering Chihuahua's a huge problem. I knew an older woman who had a stroke and her 5 year old dog given away to people who actively hurt the animal and by it's 3rd home in 4 months it was banished to a cardboard box and towel outside, where it can be 20 degrees at night. I took the dog to surrender her and was told by Sept that over 6k dogs had been turned in and most the dogs would be put to sleep, and the one I had would be dead in under a week, I kept her with hopes of finding her a forever home.

It's completely irresponsible that so many people got these dogs and made no effort to rehome them, they are suffering due to human stupidity and hard economic times but if anyone can take a dog or two, it would be a good thing to do, I wasn't a fan of the breed and pretty much would have bet a healthy kidney I would never have one but they are truly sweet dogs and will do anything to please you. If you have a heart for animals this would be the time to break it out and make a difference. Foster or get a dog from a reliable Chihuahua source, like the Chihuahua rescue or a shelter. Thousands of these poor lovable animals will die without people to save them.

  43. Most people DO come here for the blinds, I agree.

My point: good cause, but not a blind. So posting it as a blind is misleadng. Could easily have ID'd KH.

The idea was a good one: I have 5 rescue animals.

Posting it as a blind only hurts CDAN credibility and was the blog owner's decision, no one else's.

    ReplyDelete
  44. @ Middle-aged Diva - It was a blind to me; I had no idea that that stuck up twat Heigl had a compassionate bone in her body. Props to her, and if you don't care for CDAN's credibility, well, there are lots of other blogs you can follow.

  45. @zandra
every time a breed is featured in a tv series or movie, responsible breeders shudder.

    frasier, jack russell terriers
    101 dalmatians
    air bud series, golden retrievers
    beverly hills chihuahua

the general public doesn't realize that the featured animals are highly trained, with some breed characteristics masked by the training.

the sad result is dumping, which has been worsened by the economic times we are living in.

a little research is a good thing.

and yes, responsible breeders also participate in rescue and placement efforts.

  46. she reads blindgossip lol everyone say hiii

  47. As much as I loathe Heigl, I appreciate what she's doing here. I wish I could get out to CA to adopt one of those Chihuahuas! I doubt they transport them here to Panama City, but if they could or would, I'd take one (or maybe even 2) in a heartbeat. Poor babies...

I don't know how anyone could abandon their pet, no matter the circumstances. I lived rough for a while because I refused to give my Ali up, and when our situation got better, she got a brain tumor. I would have sold my soul to save her life, spent every penny I had, but nothing could be done. So I HATE to hear shit like this, it infuriates me and breaks my heart. YOU get an animal, YOU care for it for life, at least that's how I roll. No matter the cost. You'd do it for your kids, so if you cannot do it for a pet, then DON'T F*CKING GET ONE. Jesus. I know things happen, but seriously!

  48. Mango, chill.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion.

Even when it disagrees with another.

  49. amazon blue please stfu. Thanks for making me laugh I had no idea that the chihuahau problem was created by poor Mexicans in Santa Ana. I tend to agree with the other poster who sees the movie Beverly Hills Chihuahua as part of the problem

  50. good for her!
wish these folks had found such a guardian angel in time (btw, i disagree about the "low maintenance" part!) so sad...

  51. oh, please. might as well blame rock and roll.
the economy sucks. my vet bills are outrageous, and i used to get a break, price wise.
i think it's probably a lot the same with chihuahuas as it is with bunnies. they are SO adorable when they are tiny (okay, true of all creatures), but people don't think ahead. hell, i don't think ahead, and i know what i'm getting into, i just think with my heart.
i'm vehemently pro animal (anti-peta), but this problem has existed for a very long time. right now it's chihuahuas. a couple of years ago it was pit bull mix (at least out my way). it's not the movies, it's not "poor mexicans" (if anything, it's rich airhead white celebutards in this case), and somebody famous stood up and did something nice.
it was a blind to me, too, i can't BELIEVE what some commenters will choose to bitch about! it gets more attention as a blind, people!
if i could get this much attention in one day to just ONE rabbit shelter (fuck that, ONE RABBIT in desperate need) i'd be happy for a month!
yeah, i posted the above before i finished reading the posts.
what's really sad, is nobody will even see this because it's a post from yesterday.
rant over. i'll continue when easter rolls around.

  52. star_grades: Yes, I did take that photo of Amanda back in the summer of 2005; I've been using her as my avatar lots of places because, well, she's a lot more photogenic than I am. The Dresden Dolls were at the (late lamented) Grand Opening--a fine adult store w/a great sense of humor that's been taken over by Good Vibrations & totally yuppified IMNSHO--to help Kim the owner demo a new toy called the "Audi-Oh"; it was a sound-activated vibrator that you could strap on over your hoohoo & let 'er rip. (No, sorry, no nudity was involved, and I don't think anyone actually came, but a good time was had by all...) I had just gotten back into knitting & was having fun knitting Trent Reznor dolls for shits & giggles, and the Dolls had just opened up for NIN that spring, so I brought them along. (Artsy-craftsy fangirl goes bugfuck, film at 11! ;-) If you want to check out the other pictures, I think I've got them up over at the robinthemadphotographer.com site (which is horribly out of date & needs a major purge, I know).
