It's About Damn Time
John Edwards finally admitted publicly what the rest of the world knew a couple of years ago. He is the father of Rielle Hunter's baby. In a statement provided to NBC, Edwards said, “I am Quinn’s father. I will do everything in my power to provide her with the love and support she deserves. I have been able to spend time with her during the past year and trust that future efforts to show her the love and affection she deserves can be done privately and in peace."
He then went on to say that he is sorry that he ever denied he was her father and that she will understand when she is older. Uh huh. What is he going to say? "Look the woman I was married to was suffering from cancer and I needed some loving so had sex with your mom. She got pregnant, but I was running for President so I had to pretend you were someone else's baby, lied to my wife, funneled some money to your mom from a rich guy but I still love you."
Edwards says he has also been paying child support for about a year and has just signed an agreement to pay more. Edwards is also trying to keep a low profile and spends his time helping the poor. Seriously. I'm not making that up. His people actually said that.
He seemed like such a chicken shit sending his friend to the interview instead of manning up and going himself.
ReplyDeleteI don't know... he's a sociopath for sure, but he was on the right side of issues. Imagine where the Health Care Reform legislation would be if it were being pushed by a guy who was willing to say whaterver benefitted him and his agenda the most. (Oh dear, I'm turning into Tom Delay. Eee-Gadds.)
ReplyDeletekinda makes Jon Gosselin look like father of the year
ReplyDeleteHow about helping his poor wife.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe I ever voted for that asshat.
Asshat asshat asshat.
well don't forget the wife made lots of dough off her husbands indiscretion with her book. i think that marriage was over far b4 the cancer. is he an asshat? yes. do i care what goes on between two marrieds? no.
ReplyDeleteas for the kid...her mother has some explaining to do also.
Edwards' minions also asked that his "privacy be respected" on this issue. Where on earth does one find these people? You can't make stuff like this up.
ReplyDeleteWhen I first heard this on the news, I immediately wondered what he wanted the publicity for. He's been very quietly doing whatever he's been doing for the past couple of years. If he really wanted to "keep a low profile", why bring this up now & make a public statement about it? I'm thinking there has to be a reason he wants to public to remember him and that the b.s. about trying to keep a low profile is just that: b.s.
ReplyDeleteHis wife is dying from cancer. I say good for her for making some money from her book! At least she made that money on her own and wasn't a sneaking slut or a piece of shit husband who is a total liar, who cheated on her while she has cancer. She also lost a son. I think she deserves a pass for any money she gets out of this. It will probably be something she can leave to her surviving children as a cushion against their douche bag father.
ReplyDeleteI am amazed he didn't announce this last week to further submarine any attempt at being a stand up guy. Ha! But what am I saying .. John Edwards a stand up guy!! As if!!
ReplyDeletePoor Elizabeth! I really like her a lot and think she deserves so much better in her final days.
All three adults in this scenario have tried to paint themselves as the victim. The only true victim here is that poor little girl.
ReplyDeleteElizabeth Edwards was in contract to write a book on the topic of resilience well before the affair even happened - it was to focus on her cancer and the death of her son. I haven't read it but media sites have reported that it contains a whopping page and a half about this humiliating affair. So she doesn't appear to have written a book to make millions and millions of dollars from the Hunter/Edwards imbroglio. I also don't see why you can't see her as a victim of Hunter and her own disgusting spouse. You can feel for Quinn without being compelled to denigrate Elizabeth.
ReplyDeletethe only word that comes to mind is Douchetasic. He is the definition of that made up word. (Jon Gosslin just helped cement it into existance)
ReplyDeleteWell, well, the old boy finally 'fessed up. I think political wives are a different breed. Has anyone read the book that isn't very flattering to Elizabeth? I'll have to search for the title...
ReplyDeleteAnyone else read the excerpt from "Game Change" in New York Magazine? The only people I feel sorry for here are the children. (The original children and the new spin-off.)
ReplyDeleteThat's the book! I emailed the link from the New York magazine yesterday, but didn't have the chance to open it yet.
ReplyDeleteThere was a interview with Edwards wife in the O magazine last year, she didn't come across as a victim . One thing that came across kinda strange was that she only had one wish for their marriage was that Edwards be faithful. She also seemed to be in total denial that he could be the father of little Quinn.
ReplyDeleteOf course John Edwards is an a--hole. No one ever doubted it.
ReplyDeleteBut.... that is a cute picture of the baby.
Oh and I can't stand that damned Hunter mistress of his.
And last but not least I feel bad for the terminally ill Elizabeth. You can judge her to your hearts content but you are not the one with terminally ill cancer. I don't even want to imagine having to deal with this if I were in her shoes.
califblondy I read that too. Very disturbing, and I agree, I only feel sorry for the kids in all this.
ReplyDelete@ Tea Lady, " why bring this up now & make a public statement about it?" I read this morning on the NY Post website that Andrew Young, the Edwards campaign aide who initially said he was the baby's father, has a new book about the scandal which is set to hit stores. The articles doesn't say when. Everybody's got to make a buck.
ReplyDeleteFirst off, no denying Edwards is the hands down winner of Douche of the Decade. (Sorry, Jon Gosselin and Michael Lohan, please pick up your consolation prizes at the exit)
ReplyDeleteSecond, I for one believe that Hunter set Edwards up - she planned the pregnancy to get Edwards to marry her. It didn't work out quite as she'd planned, however it did save the country from electing him.
Third, I have nothing but respect for Elizabeth Edwards - through all this BS she has managed to keep her head up and has never let this beat her down. Cudos to her!
Fourth, I'm willing to bet that Edwards is going to try for another political position in the near future; undoubtedly sometime after Elizabeth dies and he can try to portray himself as the victim of Hunter's manipulations who was under the combined stress of the campaign and Elizabeth's cancer.
Maybe this is the unflattering comment about Elizabeth Edwards in the book Game Change that is quoted in the New York Times:
ReplyDelete“The nearly universal assessment among them,” Mr. Halperin and Mr. Heilemann write of the Edwards aides, “was that there was no one on the national stage for whom the disparity between public image and private reality was vaster or more disturbing. What the world saw in Elizabeth: a valiant, determined, heroic everywoman. What the Edwards insiders saw: an abusive, intrusive, paranoid, condescending crazywoman.”
Scary but as I said I'm not dying of cancer so right now I won't judge her behavior.
MissCupCakeMagee: I saw the book excerpt and am currently reading "Game Change" (a real page turner). I had heard similar things about Elizabeth from friends I have who work in national politics; she is definitely the beneficiary of some very good PR. Her personality is very crude, arrogant and supremely condescending. It is terrible that she is terminally ill, but her sour personality was in well in place for years before she got sick. She is no martyr.
ReplyDeleteWow - never thought this day would come.
ReplyDeleteI just cant believe she was willing to back and work hard for her husband to become a candidate for president, knowing what she did. I find that just absolutely horrific. What if he had gotten the nomination and this shit would have come out during the campaign? Just... so selfish

ReplyDeleteSurprising about Elizabeth.
ReplyDeleteI've been trying to buy Game Change but it's out of stock everywhere!
ReplyDeleteUrgh, I once thought he was a good guy too.
I always thought it was creepy though how they thought they had to replace the son who died with two new kids who are almost young enough to be their daughter's children. Eek.
Giving the Kardashians a run for their money, this bunch...
ReplyDeleteJohn Edwards was never a good guy. He was NC's biggest Ambulance-Chaser, and fairly responsible for the dearth of OB/GYNs in the state thanks to his very successful but bogus cerebral palsy lawsuits.
ReplyDeleteThe narcissism in this guy is amazing, even for a politician.
That little girl is so cute! She has to get hugs and kisses all the time. She'll be okay.
ReplyDeleteI am not an Elizabeth fan. She made some horrible comments about that little girl, which were totally unnecessary. The little girl is the only innocent one in this whole scandal.
