Maura Tierney Drops Out Of Parenthood

Maura Tierney told the world back in July that she was going to undergo surgery to remove a tumor in her breast. At that time the plan was that she would have the surgery and return to the show Parenthood which had just started shooting. Now though, she is being forced to drop out of the show because her treatments are going to interfere with the production schedule.

Her spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter that Maura is disappointed she can't be on the show and that "her doctors remain confident that the outcome of her treatments will be positive."

I really hope so because Maura is one of my all time favorite people and actresses.

I saw this yesterday and became worried that she's learned her disease is worse than originally realized.

All the best to Maura for a full recovery.

Aw, Enty. She is one of my favorites too, ever since her Newsradio days. Her and Dave were adorable together and had great repartee.

I have loved her since News Radio and adored her Nurse then Dr Abby Flockhart(?) character on ER.

I wish her nothing but the very best wishes.

That's too bad I was looking forward to watching her on Parenthood. I hope she makes a speedy and complete recovery. I think they should have held up prodution a little longer. She is worth waiting for.

I see this every day, so I'll bet this is what's going on:

The lump was removed, but when they were looking over the pathology sample, they noticed the cancer went beyond the edges of the surgical cut (called having "positive margins"). It is standard treatment to have about 5 wks of radiation to the site to prevent recurrence.

The alternative is that they found she had positive sentinal nodes as well (lymph nodes that drain from the breast that are positive for cancer cells) and have to do a completion mastectomy (remove the breast and lymph nodes in her armpit), followed by chemo/rads. I doubt that was the case, however, as she likely would have stated she was having more surgery.

Good luck to her in either case...she's got a tough road coming.

When my mother had breast cancer, she had a very small tumor that was easily removed, w/no lymph node invasion. Initially, she was under the impression that she'd get the surgery and that would be it, but a couple of weeks later, they sprang it on her that they wanted her to have chemo & radiation, just to be on the very safe side...

Damn, was she PISSED. (Not just at the cancer, mind you, but she'd thought she'd avoided chemo, so the idea she hadn't made her totally ripshit.) I have a couple of really classic photos I took of her on my parents' 50th anniversary of her wearing one of my Reznor heater t-shirts, a baseball hat from the heater factor on her bald head, w/sunglasses, and flipping the bird at the camera. ;-) And people wonder where I get it from...

Anyway, I'm going to guess that Maura's going through a similar situation; the tumor itself was small and completely removed, but the doctors are engaging in a little CYA. Good luck, Maura--we're rooting for you!
