"Friends" Movie Doesn't Make Any Sense

The Daily Mail was orgasmic this weekend when describing what they say is a done deal. The reuniting of the Friends cast for a Friends movie. The source of all their information appears to be James Michael Tyler. He played Gunter and of course is totally willing to be in the movie. I bet he is. Right now he travels the world opening coffee shops that are named Central Perk. I gather it is the same kind of thing when Cheers bars started opening up across the country and the characters could make a couple of bucks by showing up at one of them.

Apparently this whole rumor got started because Sex And The City made so much money and so the cast of Friends wants a piece of that money pie. There won't be a movie, and if there is a movie it will suck. Here's why. Sex And The City was shot every week like a movie. It was also essentially a soap opera and so they just expanded it into three or four episodes instead of one. It works in that kind of format.

Friends was filmed in front of a live studio audience and was a sitcom. Yes, there were some continuing story lines, but most, if not all episodes were the standard sitcom formula. It doesn't translate well into two hours of movie. Also, I don't think you can convince all six to reunite for a movie. If you ant to have some kind of 20th anniversary television special I think they would all show up. A movie? Nope. Would the movie do well at the box office? Of course. Would it be any good? Nope.

Loved this show, especially in the later years.
Movie won't happen. Get real, Gunter.

Some things just need to be left alone. This is one of them.

I never saw the attraction of this show. But it ran for like 20 years, and is there really anything left to do with the characters? How many times does anyone care that the grating Ross guy gets Rachel back?

Didn't watch the show, won't watch the movie. It's just not something I can get into.

Really, there is nothing left for them to do. BUT i am sure someone would pay to see it.

i agree there are enough fans out there who would make it box office gold....but the "stars" would never agree on salaries since some have gone on to bigger things since friends...(well they THINK they've gone on to bigger things )

I loved this show when it was on TV and I would go to great lengths not to miss a single episode. But I just caught an episode on TV the other day and I really don't get why I loved it so much. I know it's been a while and tastes change, but...really? I used to watch this?

Harriet - I feel exactly the same way. I like to catch Seinfeld reruns but Friends? Meh.

Maybe they are just going to remake the show into a movie format. After all the appeal of the original group certainly won't carry over to the younger generation, so maybe they can hire one of the Simpsons for phoebe, and One of the Kardashians as Monica, and maybe the chick from the Hills with the eyes for Rachel. And hopefully they won't have David Schwimmer in the cast, because after seeing Madagascar all I see when I hear him talk is the giraffe.

Can't they come up with an original movie idea anymore?

i dunno, i was convinced watching the second madagascar movie the other day on cable that it wasn't even schwimmer reprising the role. everybody but chris rock sounded different.

i could see maybe a tv special, but not a theatre release. although i watched it off and on, i didn't live and die for the show. i found sienfeld more annoying. and forget satc. yuck.
i think they should have given chandler his own show instead of joey. eh.

I love what Seinfeld is doing, having the cast reunite on Curb Your Enthusiasm. SO much better than doing a pathetic movie.

I tried to watch Friends once. No thanks. I think I'd opt for a root canal sans novocaine before sitting through two hours of it in a theater.

Besides, Jennifer Aniston has been perpetually playing her character from Friends in practically every movie she's ever been in.

I'm the only one here who would watch a Friends movie? Loved that show. It was funny. And I still enjoy the reruns.

Friends was only good to watch to see what Cox and Jen A were wearing.
