Retirement Fever Hits Hollywood
Apparently Angelina Jolie is a trendsetter. Last week if you will recall she said she was going to give up acting at some point to focus on her family and also because I guess it is tough juggling films and pregnancies. It isn't like she and Brad are hurting for cash on the homefront, so if she decided to retire in a few years, I think the only impact would be that maybe instead of a new jet every year, maybe they could only get one every two years. Well, with all the attention she got for saying that she might retire you would think that other actresses would be wanting to jump in with both feet to try and steal some of Angelina's roles.
Well, not Nicole Kidman. Nicole is also thinking of retiring from acting. Not because she has not had a hit movie in forever and people are balking at paying her outrageous fee for flops, but because she too just wants to stay home and have more babies. Last night at the premiere of Australia, she said she couldn't handle being away from her daughter and so she is just thinking about giving it all up for family.
Not to be outdone by the women, Chris Martin said in an interview yesterday that he is going to quit Coldplay next year when he turns 33 because he wants to spend time with his family and feels that all rockers should give up by the age of 33. I don't know where he came up with that age, but I would gather by the time he hits about 33 and three months and realizes that not being a rocker means staying home with Gwyneth everyday that he will suddenly discover that perhaps 33 might be too young to retire after all.
I just love how these trends just become news. One week all the articles are about actors wanting to adopt. The next week all the articles are about how everyone cooks all their own food and then this week every person wants to retire. It's like the publicists see what gets news and then tells their client to go ahead and say the same damn thing. Either that or every publicist has the same idea of the week calendar they all got for Christmas.

I am pretty sure at another time Jolie had this said before and up to now she hasn't retired.
Because giving up acting to spend time with the family just sounds much better than giving it up because your face is frozen and you can no longer emote....
Retirement is the new baby bump.
If it means I will no longer have to look at Granny Freeze or St Angelina, I WILL SEND MONEY TO THEM OR THE CHARITY OF THEIR CHOICE.

Why 33? It's because it's the age at which someone REALLY FAMOUS, uh, 'retired'.
More famous than Coldplay. More famous than the Beatles, despite John Lennon might have said.
Chris Martin assumes that 33 is the age at which truly 'divine' artists should leave the scene.
Haven't some actors and actresses always done this? For fun, we could make a list of those who retired early. Doris Day, Meg Tilly, Norma Shearer, Phoebe Cates......
I would be devistated if Chris Martin retired. I know people don't like him or his wife but Coldplay concerts are amazing.
you know i loved Coldplay back when no one knew who they were and the gig i saw only held 400 people and then they got big and Chris started believing his own hype.

Oh yeah, I was thinking about retiring early to spend more time with my kids, too...Oh, wait...I forgot..they have to eat, right? Nevermind. I'm just jealous. I'm about to have to fire someone and go back to work full time. Damn this economy!

chris martin is an asshole .. most of the legendary musicians made more contibutions after the age of 33 ... his only contribution was one great album and the rest sucked ass ...go home to gwennie and live off her $$$$ for awhile .. make a comeback or two or three and then call it a day!

The problem is that this type of career attracts people who crave attention.
Reminds me of when I was younger, & whatever I wanted to do was always turned down with "Would you jump off the roof just because everyone else was doing it?" Something the older generation of parents must have learned in Parents School.
my parents went to that same school ..and graduated cum laude!

Chris Martin isn't retiring because he's 33...he's retiring because Cold Play, in Lainey's words, Sucks Ass. It was truly horrible - from his yips, squeals, acrobatics to the bands matching clothes.
CP has some beautiful songs...maybe a few years off will refresh the creative juices and fashion sense.
angelina has never had any pr rep(brad got rid of his, too), so she prob got the idea to stay home bc she has SIX kids- she said in that UK that she would do about one movie a yr (she'll have been off set for over a year once she starts up in Feb)then even less unless something "creative" comes along- sigh- must be nice- she's 33, so perhaps that is where Chris M got the idea!

"33" Chris? Really? Apparently, the "Power of Christ" compels him. Or something.
Um, since when has Coldplay been considered "rock"? And for that matter, how the hell is Chris Martin a "rocker"? Coldplay is a lame-ass band, I've heard more rockin' music on elevators.
As for all these celebs "retiring", all I have to say is GOOD RIDDANCE. The only one I would actually miss is Joaquin Phoenix, but that's because I love him so. The rest of them can rot in hell for all I care.
