Mira Sorvino Employs Her Husband

When is the last time you read gossip about Mira Sorvino? Huh? Long time I bet. Well, as far as you know it has been a long time. Never know when someone is going to turn up in the blind items. Remember, if you win an Oscar, you are a B lister for life.

Anyway, I'm sure Mira is a role model to all the women out there, as she is 40 years old and married to a 26 year old named Chris Backus. She actually married him when he was 22 or 23. It actually is kind of cool that it happens in reverse sometimes. It's not freaky at all like when Barbra Streisand had her little thing with Andre Aggasi.

Chris is a professional athlete turned actor and like most athletes turned actor has been having a little difficulty getting roles. Well, not wanting to always make him feel like she is the sole bread winner for the entire family, which she is, or the reason their two children can have the best of everything, which she is, Mira decided to do something about it. She wrote an entire film, and is producing it, just so she can get her husband a starring role. It's much easier of course on the conscience to go this route because he gets an actual paycheck and doesn't have to take money from her purse when he needs to go to the store for baseball cards.

I know, I know. Baseball cards? He isn't that young. I want you to know that even though I'm being snarky, I don't blame Mira and think that a guy in her position would do the same thing. I know that when I turned 40 and was seeing that 19 year old, I needed to keep her happy so I bought her a pane ticket every weekend so she could see her dying mother in Las Vegas. That woman was sick for a year, but my girlfriend was on that plane every Friday night like clockwork and would be back in my arms by Tuesday. Wednesday at the latest. I admire that much devotion to family.

I think everyone in Mira's position would start to feel that, "I met him when he could barely drink, and now it has been a few years, I'm 40 and haven't been big in a little while except when I was pregnant, and I'm wondering if I am still attractive and if he feels manly enough because he doesn't make any money, and we live off my income, so let me write and produce a movie so he feels like he is working. "

I'm wondering if we already got one...hmmmm

that Aggasi(athlete) and Streisand (singer) comment sounds like a reveal.

Hmm I can see where her line of thinking is in justifying it, misguided though it may be. Maybe she thinks if she can just get him out there and seen, that people will see he is talented and more seriously consider casting him...still though, kinda funny.

why doesn't she get roles? i don't know much about her. i hope she wrote a part for herself, they both need some exposure.

Ent, don't be an asshole. Maybe she wrote a film because it's her personal project and he inspired her, so she cast him? Just because he isn't the breadwinner doesn't mean he isn't a nice guy. Maybe he even encouraged her to write it? (BTW I have no idea what their relationship is like, but it doesn't seem like a bad relationship from afar).

Could this be a blind about Mira??

"B list film actress. I say B list based entirely on name recognition. Everyone knows she is an actress, but honestly it seems like forever since she has been in anything. A+ name recognition though. Bit of a drug problem. OK, more than bit. A lot. A bunch. She could keep the cartels in business by herself. She needs to go to rehab. The whole family knows she needs to go rehab, but she thinks she can do it on her own. Doesn't want the stigma attached to her about rehab. She is not one of those people who seeks out publicity and certainly not for that. She has been quietly meeting a counselor for several hours each day, and trying to make it. If she doesn't make it through though, don't be surprised if she disappears for awhile. If she does go to rehab, it will not be in the US or anywhere in the Western Hemisphere."

I always liked Mira, and was happy she won that Oscar -- it was an excellent performance.

If she wrote it for her husband, that's awesome, it shows she's devoted to him and his needs. I think it's sweet.

By the way, what I'm trying to say is that maybe money isn't everything, and isn't it POSSIBLE that he inspires her? I can speak from experience, my husband has helped me build my business a lot. When we met years ago, we both didn't have very much of anything. If I based everything on how much money he made when he was in his 20s, I would never have stayed with him. Now we're in our 30s, and I don't think that I would have done as well as I have been if not for his support. The same goes for him, and now he makes almost twice the amount that I do. Not everyone is shallow and superficial, I refuse to believe it!!!

So now if you win an Oscar you're B list for life?

Chris Backus was a professional athlete? WHERE? I can't find anything on him.

I'm a Sorvino fam fan, so I couldn't care less what they do and more power to both of them.

So what, Ent? I'm so sick of the double standard. Why is it ok for women to enjoy the perks of being in a relationship with a powerful person but not the other way around? As much as you hate Tom Cruise, you never mention the fact that he's way older than KatE and that the reason she has A list name recognition is because she married Tom. You say how you don't blame Mira, but the rest of the argument contradicts that statement. If she has the power and the ability to put him in a movie, why the F not? Besides, nepotism is a part of life. It happens all the time. If it didn't, we'd never know who the heck Tori Spelling was.

The Agassi-Sampras "thing" received a lot of publicity in 1993, when she sat in his player's box at Wimbledon's Center Court throughout the tournament. He still had his long hair at the time, and was publicizing his "Image is Everything" ad campaign. Basically, he was known for style over substance at the time, even though he was the Wimbledon defending champion. Sampras defeated him in a great quarterfinal match on the way to his first of seven Wimbledon titles, then mocked him on Letterman by impersonating Streisand's cheers from the player's box: "Come on, Dre! Come on, Dre!" It was hilarious, especially considering Pete and Andre are lifelong friends, and Sampras had a "boring" reputation, even though he always had a sly sense of humor.

I forgot to add that Andre and Barbra were mocked by many because she called him a Zen master in a courtside interview at a time when he was thought to be an airhead. It wasn't until he got a lot older that people realized how intelligent Agassi really is. Anyway, there has always been a lot of speculation in the tennis world over whether they ever really were an item.

More power to her!

I've had relationships with younger guys and they bring something to the table that older guys just can't match. Not that there's anything wrong with older guys. You know, whatever floats your boat.

twis - chris was a pro baseball player, but she met him while he was waiting tables. the movie she wrote is about a baseball plyer.

OHHHHH!!! Thanks, Cap. I couldn't find a thing when I googled, so I appreciate the scoop.

I think that *years* ago there were BIs about a Harvard-educated actress and her hyper-controlling parents -- and I'm pretty sure it was Sorvino. Maybe this is her declaration of independence of another sort. (as in: developing her own project, yadda yadda.)

I agree with Customer and think that its perfectly reasonable that she is casting him in her movie. Its quite possible that he is a good actor (I liked him in his guest appearance on Will and Grace) and he is gorgeous to boot.
Not to mention the fact that it might be great for a husband and wife to work together on the same project, particularly seeing as they have a child.

When I find a man who is man enough, I'll marry him so I can go back to work (which I love!) but also keep my standards of home & family. ENVY Mira! I had to "arrange" to have my children...
